Okay, I should have stipulated most vulnerable at nickle.  While Reid and Boston are upgrades over what we've had back there most recently, both are over-hyped for being better than average.  It's impossible to field eleven Pro Bowlers on either side of the ball though so solidify what you can the best you can.

Yep, for the Panthers, Boston/Reid is a good safety combo but honestly it's a pretty average safety combo it's just that pretty average is pretty good for the Panthers at safety. We don't value those positions.

I agree.  The corollary to this is that if our front seven is performing the way our staff wants it to, we don't need much more than just average to look pretty darn good on the back end.

Yep. Guys like Kurt Coleman and Mike Mitchell looked all-world at times playing behind our front seven when we had an elite pass rush.

It helps to have guys that know the playbook and know what they’re doing in the deep part of the secondary. It’s been woeful for the past of couple years. Adams was streaky. Reid was learning the system, as they threw him to the wolves. I get why they did that and it ended up being a good thing. But competent safety play has been lacking since 2015, and even then, Harper was a liability at times.

Coleman had a remarkable season that year. The pass rushed helped a lot. Then again, the secondary forced more fumbles—Considerably more fumbles that year than any year since. Don’t underestimate that peanut punch.

Coleman should have made the Pro bowl that year he had like 8 picks, but got snubbed.  Goes to show even average players can thrive in the right situation. Speaking of which, Boston essentially said he wanted to parlay this one-year deal into a fat contract, confident he's going to have a solid year.  If so, do you feel he's going to get paid here since we just paid Reid and we have an arse-lode of players on one-year contracts looking for a big multi-year deals?  McCoy is an example that immediately comes to mind.

Define "paid". I don't see the Panthers paying any safety the way free agent safeties got paid this off-season.

Eric Reid-esque like 3 years at roughly $7 million per year.  I doubt it, but Boston already put it out there he's looking to rake in the cash after what he deemed would be another successful season.

I can't blame Boston for going with the absolute highest bidder if the opportunity presents itself. He's still looking for that big NFL payday. According to spotrac.com, he's "only" made about $5.3M in his career so far. Sure, that's a LOT of money but it's not much at all by modern NFL contract standards.

If he has a good season, I doubt we'll be the highest bidder. I still kinda feel like our staff doesn't really trust him. We didn't really want him here, we just got to camp and realized that he was in all likelihood our best bad option. Even with a good season under his belt, I'm not sure if we'd even be willing to offer him what we gave Reid.
