Key Matchup: Van Roten vs. Donald

Van Roten is best as a pulling guard, so expect us to try that and run away from Donald.  A good DT with quick feet like that will follow the G across the LOS---he is escorting him to the play...Result?  Donald in your earhole.

Screens can be effective to negate one player, and slants etc. work at times, but if they know you can't go deep---we should all know what defensive backfields do in that situation.  They force you to play the game in the box--where they live.

We have got to do more than run at him, slants, and screens.  We have to play our game at times.  That is where we need an extra lineman out there.

I will say this---A thread like this brings out the football purists--the people posting here are among the brightest football fans on here---not to say that not posting here means they are dumb--we all know Mr. Scot is probably taking his first of three required naps right now.

Have you ever seen a screen play blown up? Are we really proficient at screen plays? I think you are underestimating a hot knife through butter. It just sucks that we ignored LG. I just googled top DTs and the list was a pre-2018 list and 7 of the 14 we play this year and 1 of the 14 is on our team (McCoy, not Short). It doesn’t include 2 games against Rankins of NO who broke out with 8 sacks last year.

We play a lot of good DTs and our weakest spot on the team is now LG, which easily could have been remedied with pick 77.

For some reason, Marty feels you can throw numbers at G spots and find a player..Heck, to your point--our RG is a third rounder and he is fairly good, I think.

    • PFF feeds the beast.  So it’s largely popular for that IMO and is embraced by the NFL machine because it helps feed the beast.  Thats why you see the cute stats pop on the Monday Night football screen lol.  Hot takes? Fantasy football? Yeah, it’s good for the NFL machine for lots of reason.  I do think the league embraces them.  Not because they are actually good at doing what they claim. actual analytics folks are critical of PFF.  Because it’s not analytics.  It’s subjective goobly goo ratings by dudes that aren’t really qualified nor even have the info to do real grading.  you got legit NFL players who say they have literally put PFF grades by the coaches grades and they are worlds apart.  Players have laughed at them pretending they can grade certain plays without the underlining info.  NFL coaches have called out there bologna at pressers.   could it be a quick tool to find out some info that has nothing to with their subjective grades? Sure.  There is a lot of data on 32 teams for cheap. But I do not buy the narrative 32 NFL teams think their grades are worth a poo or remotely accurate or meaningful.
    • Bills D looks like ass
    • I think that win vs Dallas gave them a big boost of confidence.  Thats a team that blew us out the past 2 seasons. Even when Bryce was playing okay late last season they still beat us pretty bad.  Lets see if we slaughter the Jets or go back to playing sloppy uninspired football and go from there.
