Speculation from a Pittsburgh source

That might explain why Rivera and Hurney are still here, Tepper had to wait a year to get the guy he wanted.

It is fairly unusual for a new owner not to clean house and install his own guys.

That thought has crossed my mind.

I don't know if I'm ready to go that far, but I acknowledge it's possible.

It'd be interesting to know just how well Tepper and Colbert are acquainted.

It's this kind of stuff where it pays to have the richest owner in the NFL. No salary cap for coaches and GMs. If Tepper wants to win (and I know he does), then he can simply outbid everyone else if he wants someone and he can always get his guy.

It doesn't even necessarily have to be a matter of money.

Full autonomy is a very attractive thing.

He just traded a first round pick for a safety...want no part of that

Twenty years of success, three Super Bowl appearances, two championships and only one losing season...

Youre gonna negate all that for one transaction you didn't like?

Not to get super tin foil hatty, but when you know you've got an open offer to be the GM of another team next year (Carolina), what value is your current team's next first rounder anyway aside from a trade piece.

Outside of always spending a 2-4th rounder on a WR (which I can obviously get behind) he’s drafted guys like Jarvis Jones, Bud Dupree, Artie Burns in the 1st.

They had some real core pieces already in place when he took over as GM. He obviously chipped in since 2000 but since it’s been his show starting in 2010 they haven’t won a SB. You’re defending him like you did Gettleman. Gettleman wasn’t the one responsible for the Giants SB’s yet most here kept talking about those SB’s.

I’m not saying F this guy but I’m also not going to turn a blind eye to this stuff. Before this report, everyone here would agree Pittsburgh is a dumpster fire at the moment

Colbert's been in charge of football operations since 2000. The Steelers just didn't use the term "General Manager" to describe the job until 2010. He's the first (and for the moment, only) Steelers official to hold that title.

Ooo ok well that’s good to know

Colbert has run the Steelers football operations since 2000. In that span, they have three Super Bowl appearances, two Lombardi trophies, and one losing season.

One losing season...in almost twenty years.

Since 2000, they actually have more Super Bowl appearances and more Super Bowl trophies than they have losing seasons.

If we can have success anywhere close to that level, I don't give a damn if they call us the Decatur Staleys.

Yeah, they have had a healthy Hall of Fame QB that entire time.  Makes things very easy.

His official title now is like "vice president in charge of something". I forget what.

NFL teams frequently use title changes to justify giving raises even when the person getting the new title is still doing the same stuff he was already doing.

Not the entire time. Colbert drafted Roethlisberger in 2004.

I don't even remember who they had the previous seasons. Might have been Kordell Stewart but I don't think he was still there when they drafted Roethlisberger.

I know Bill Cowher didn't want to use a first round pick on a quarterback but Colbert either talked him into it or overruled him (don't really know which).

Well that changes my opinion about him, thanks.

He’s not afraid to make a trade either. Getting Joe Haden and Fitzpatrick. I believe he traded up for Devin Bush in the draft.

Willing to work with some of the guys with questionable pasts.

I’m sure there’s worse options out there

Except when you compare the two teams records this year... advantage Bills, as strange as that sounds.

Don't worry, it it September.  The Bills have had seasons when they looked like they were Super Bowl bound in September, and then Toilet Bowl bound after that.

We, on the other hand, have shown interest in the Toilet Bowl early.  I don't care if the Bills reverse the historical trend and remain competitive (I would actually like to see somebody other than the Pats show some level of interest in the AFCE), but it would be nice if we reversed our early fortunes here.

I get the sense that a lot of people in Pittsburgh feel that they have really underachieved these past few years and Colbert is getting swept into that group with Tomlin. Fans on twitter (great source yeah yeah) want them to clean house and rebuild.

They have underachieved under Tomlin. The Steeler's worst season with Tomlin is 8-8 (twice). Yet they're 8-7 in the post-season with 2 SB appearances and 1 win.
