Person suggests that even though a losing season will likely cost Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney their jobs, Cam Newton should take as much time off to fully rehab as he needs.

After the loss to Tampa Bay, Rivera was adamant that Newton’s disappearance in the run game — particularly on the decisive, fourth-down play — was not health-related.

“Don’t even worry about the foot,” Rivera said. “The foot has nothing to do with it.”

This is going to get interesting.  I would love to know what Cam and Ron discussed yesterday.  According to Ron they had a "good talk".   Ron and Marty find themselves in a sticky situation here and it is solely self inflicted on their part.

why would the team extend him at this point

I dont understand this then.....what is the reason for not using Cam in the run game at all if, according to Ron, he thought Cams foot was just fine on Thursday?  Hes alluding to there being some reason, just that its not the foot.  So, what was it then?  I think Ron is lying and hes backed himself into a corner now.

This is what happens when you ignore the QB position for years.  They should have been trying to draft a viable replacement every year for this very reason as we see unfolding before our very own tear filled eyes.

I don't believe they will, though I grant the possibility for one of Hurney's "thank you" contracts has crossed my mind (not sure Tepper would sign off on that like Richardson did).

With all that said, Person is primarily arguing that Newton should think of himself first.

Igo has said many times that the team has for a long time "tiptoed" around Newton for fear of doing anything to offend him (something that drafting a potential replacement could conceivably have done).

I don't know if that's the reason, but it's one theory.
