Person: Time to look out for #1

Mr. Scot

Person suggests that even though a losing season will likely cost Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney their jobs, Cam Newton should take as much time off to fully rehab as he needs.

It's time for Cam to rehab, heal and win again

Despite a two-month losing streak that left the Panthers all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs last season, the Panthers still waited until Week 16 to shut Newton down. They really didn’t have a choice at that point.

Newton’s shoulder got so bad that during a Thursday night game at New Orleans, he couldn’t get the ball farther than 20 yards downfield.

This year is thornier.

The Panthers are 0-2 in a season that likely will determine whether head coach Ron Rivera and his staff, general manager Marty Hurney and his front office, and the franchise quarterback will be back in 2020.

By losing their first two games at home, the Panthers have left themselves no room for error.

But by playing at less than 100 percent, Newton wouldn’t just potentially cost the Panthers a shot at winning — he also risks costing himself money.

Further...

It’s tough for Newton to put his best foot forward when it’s injured.

After the loss to Tampa Bay, Rivera was adamant that Newton’s disappearance in the run game — particularly on the decisive, fourth-down play — was not health-related.

“Don’t even worry about the foot,” Rivera said. “The foot has nothing to do with it.”

Then Newton told him it did.

I dont understand this then.....what is the reason for not using Cam in the run game at all if, according to Ron, he thought Cams foot was just fine on Thursday?  Hes alluding to there being some reason, just that its not the foot.  So, what was it then?  I think Ron is lying and hes backed himself into a corner now.

if cam is on the roster next year, he costs 20 million in cap space.

cutting him leaves 2 million.

why would the team extend him at this point

it's a bad position to be in

This is what happens when you ignore the QB position for years.  They should have been trying to draft a viable replacement every year for this very reason as we see unfolding before our very own tear filled eyes.

I don't believe they will, though I grant the possibility for one of Hurney's "thank you" contracts has crossed my mind (not sure Tepper would sign off on that like Richardson did).

With all that said, Person is primarily arguing that Newton should think of himself first.

There is the very distinct possibility that Rivera is full of sh-t.

Igo has said many times that the team has for a long time "tiptoed" around Newton for fear of doing anything to offend him (something that drafting a potential replacement could conceivably have done).

I don't know if that's the reason, but it's one theory.

    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
    • Supposedly he plans on staying in college for all 4 years.
