Again, Michael Oher the following year.

The whole narrative that Gettleman ignored the tackle position is completely uninformed. he did have to work around a pretty restrictive salary cap situation for a while though.

Oher was a great signing and a big reason we went 15-1 that year.  Wish he could’ve stayed healthy.  I guess I’m extra salty because my best friend is a Philly fan and we went to the Panthers-Eagles game in Philly in 2014.  Our O Line was decimated from the get go and he’s never let me live it down.

Better times have come.  It feels good to have actual, quality OL depth.  Let’s internet hug over our Big Uglies.

I still have questions about our current lineup.

I'll feel a lot better if Greg Little proves he can stay healthy (ditto Trai Turner) and Matt Paradis proves he can be consistent.

I do also think they're benefiting from a quick passing game, but truth be told that's probably true of a lot of lines across the league.

Nobody thought it was a bad idea until it proved to be a bad idea.

Not true. A lot of people don't even think he's a particularly good RT.

I, for 1, was excited when we re-signed him this off season. He'd been a better than average right tackle prior to his injury, and I thought that Moton could probably slide to the left. Also, who would have dared to dream that, after years and years, we would draft not 1, but 2 left tackles?!?

I think it was the fact that we were unwilling to bring in another option that bugged me the most.  He was good for an UDFA OT.  But to sit with him and Chandler and be like, “ok, these are the guys” and they sucked the whole year when everyone knew they would was the problem

That wasn't how it went though. The team had little to no cap space for multiple seasons following Hurney 1.0's contract bonanza, and we had to completely rebuild the roster after JR had it gutted in preparation for the 2011 lockout.

The team had close to $130M committed to the 2014 cap after the franchise tag for Greg Hardy (hindsight is 20/20, but I bet the same users bemoaning that move also have multiple posts screaming to retain Hardy after his big season). The entire OL aside from center had to be rebuilt while the salary cap was still over 20% (15+% from Hurney 1.0 contracts) dead money. Another 15%+ was committed to CJ (8% by himself), DWill, and JStew. This gives us over 35% of the cap already committed to dead money and 3 players. That's why Bell was slated to be a stop-gap after Gross retired, and Garry Williams was the designated RT leading into the season but broke his ankle which was what led to Nate Chandler.

This was also during a time when Cam was encouraged to take off when protection broke down rather than sit there and get headhunted. :(

It's ironic though to complain about the OL decisions during 2014, especially since we landed Andrew Norwell in UDFA and Trai Turner in the 3rd while going to the Super Bowl with one of the OTs (Mike Remmers) we brought in to finish the season after Chandler went down.
