Not just the analytics

(this came up in another thread)

I have little doubt that his resistance to embracing analytics (or at least the way in which David Tepper wanted to use them) is a big reason why Ron Rivera is no longer coaching here. Rivera's own comments in the presser yesterday revealed a little bit of resentment on that front.

But there's another part of it.

If you listen to what Tepper has said about the kind of coach (and organization in general) that he wants, he's mentioned "old school discipline" as a big factor.

Looking at that, it makes me believe that Tepper thanks the current edition of the Panthers is soft.

That also makes me think that the next guy we get probably isn't going to be as much of a "player's coach" as Ron Rivera was. If so, the players may not have the same kind of fondness for him that they did Rivera.

But what's more important is that they play to win.

To me the "old school" comment felt very forced when he said it.  I think he's looking for a shiny new toy to build an offensive machine, and that's fine.

I honestly think he mentioned old-school because he felt it was obligatory and didn't want to upset the fanbase that appreciates hard nosed, defensive football.

I wish Mr. Tepper would provide us with the analytical matrix that confirms that Marty Hurney is one of the best evaluators of college talent in the country.

I can give you the matrix

Has drafted more pro bowlers than any general manager in the NFL

I don't get that impression at all.

He came from an organization that still has a very "old school" approach, and it works.

The one we've been using here... doesn't.

I guess it depends on what part of the organization you're referring to when looking at "old school".  The Steelers have been a high flying, finesse offense for several years now.

The Panthers have been "old school" in the approach of running the ball and playing defense.  If anything I'd say we're more old school than the Steelers on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.  If you're referring to front office stuff, however, I'd agree that they're a bit more old school.

He specifically mentioned "old school discipline".

That he thinks we didn't have that kind of thing under a coach who was a disciple of Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka says a lot.

I don't believe the Panthers have been lacking toughness until the tail end of last year.

I could be wrong, but I highly, highly doubt that Ron Rivera was one to not run a tight ship in the discipline department.  Word is (and what little video footage there is agrees) that there were some legendary ass chewings handed out in the Panthers locker room at times.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if he solely focused on defensive players when actually trying to hold his guys accountable.  You can still be "old school disciplined" when working with offensive players too.  I think Rivera lacked that, and I think if there is any weight to Tepper's statement, it's in regard to bringing someone who knows how offenses work, and knows how to hold offensive players accountable.

Pretty much what I'm getting out of it as well.

Progressive concepts as far as an analytical approach to the game in play design and calling as well as acquisition of players, etc....but an old school hard nosed approach to managing the players, which has been lacking. Rivera wanted to let the players who had paid their dues in the league to let them do what they wanted, practice when they wanted as hard as they wanted, and stay in their roles as long as they wanted. Total lack of discipline and accountability.

Players who have been here a long time may not like their comfortable life disrupted as the new coach may not pander to them and cuddle them the way Rivera did, but it will make the team better.

Side note: If we do pursue him, we would have to make him a top 5 paid coach in the NFL.

That's what I expect, but that's also the kind of money i think Tepper is willing to pay to get what he wants. He's no cheapskate.
