The knock on Hurts is he can't read defenses.  I wish I knew more about it, but it is one of those things that bothers me when I consider him.

Yeah but people say this about every mobile QB, and then they turn out to be the best in their draft class despite being passed over for some traditional statue QB who busts.

Newman has the right measurable, and has done well when he doesn't have the best talent around him. Except at wide receiver where wake has two or three guys who will likely play on Sundays in the next year or two.  He has touch on this throws, and is a good runner.  But he still looks raw at times, and I am not sure he is ready for the NFL.  Plus I really hope he stays at Wake for his next season.  But if he goes pro, might be worth a second or third round pick.

I was thinking second round--but who knows?  He has the tools, and his line was very under-appreciated, along with those stud WRs--he had a good foundation.  I think he is a project as any QB is, but when I saw him, I compared him to a Lamar Jackson/Cam Newton love child.   I might have him manage games (get the line right, CMC and short passes, but Newman has such a nice long ball...Give him a year to develop.

In other words, if we decide to let Cam play out his contract, wouldn't it be nice to groom Newman for a season?

If the offensive line play isn't going to get upgraded why would we want Tua who has not missed time in two consecutive seasons behind Alabama's offensive line?

I’m a Bama fan, but this notion that Tua is injury prone is not accurate in the ordinary sense of “injury prone.” Has Tua had injuries to both ankles and now his hip? Yes, but you have to look at the nature of those injuries. His first ankle injury was from a defensive player falling onto the side of his ankle while his foot was planted. His other ankle injury was from a 300 lb  lineman stepping directly backwards into the side of Tua’s ankle. The hip injury was just a freak accident wherein two defenders landed on Tua at the exact angle of his leg while his knee hit the ground.

I’m not saying he will overcome the hip injury and return to what he was. However, I am saying he is not “injury prone,” as in some small or weak player who always gets injured. He has simply had three freak/unlucky injuries occur. On the flip side of that though, he has shown his toughness by playing through his injured ankles. Can’t do much to play through a broken hip.

As far as a QB goes, Tua has the tools. His greatest attribute is his diagnosis of the play during his presnap read. He quickly and easily makes the right read and delivers the ball on time and on target. Again, I’m not advocating the Panthers choose him, but I would not be upset if they did (if the hip checks out).

That was the knock on Hurts when he was at Bama. I’m not sure if Lincoln Riley taught him that much this year or if it is just Riley’s system, but Jalen looked much better finding his receiver this year than he ever did at Bama. The guy is also just a winner. He willed Bama and Oklahoma both to wins in big games.

Plus, you can tell he is a stand up man through the way he handled being benched for Tua. He’s a great locker room guy and could be a fantastic QB if he keeps developing his passing game.
