What needs to be done to fix the defense?

It all starts in the trenches. We're utterly depleted on the DL and yet Short is a massive cap anchor around our neck.

This. I really don't know what the next coaching staff will do. We have half a team of 3-4 guys and half 4-3. I think it's clear we don't need to retain Butler or McCoy next year. We will have to keep Poe because we don't have another NT and he would be a cap drag too. Forcing a undersized Burns, Haynes, and Irving to play a 4-3 would be a mistake. Although Luke has looked like trash this year in the 3-4 we just paid Shaq as a ILB. All I can say is good luck.

People are living in the past

Blame the coach

Scheme

Play calling

The defense is just not good the players are average to bad.  missed,  tackles,  blown coverage , cant get off blocks

you put average to bad players on the field don't be surprised when you get an average to bad defense

Other issue being no 3-4 DEs on the team.  KK can do it, Horton? meh..more of a 4-3 DE.  We are severely undersized with no run stoppers.

It's a cluster all around.  Luke is needing to do too much because we cannot stop anyone at the first level.

IMO Luke, Shaq, Burns, & KK are scheme adaptive (Burns isn't undersized).  I don't think others are which is obviously a problem.

Burns is undersized for a 4-3 DE. It's probably the best to just rebuild for the 3-4 simply because we are going to need a NT and DT/DE either way and a 3-4 DE is easier to find. Especially since we have a college wiz in Hurney.

It starts with getting the right coach.

After that, some major adjustments need to be made on the defensive line and secondary.  The linebackers might be ok, but its hard to tell with the other areas looking so bad.

I honestly don't think our CB situation is horrible. I think our Safety situation is and will need to be retooled.

Jackson has looked horrible the last two weeks.  He may be mentally out of it.  Hopefully a new staff can focus his attention a little more.

Jackson is a second year player. It's not unusual. Rarely do you see a young CB play really good. Especially what they are asking him to do.

    • I swear Morgan didn't have 1st(#1 overall) or a 2nd rounder in this rebuild.......Then his first 2nd rounder that he gave up two 5ths for is now out for basically 2 years..... Football is not forgiving....
    • This. They better not even think about bringing him back if they are short on TE's.
    • MHS, You are missing Claudin Cherelus is a LB that's in the mix for the 4th spot. He's been here for 2 years and had a couple injuries. I mean he was a wavier claim and been here for evero system, just had bad luck when given a chance. Jon Rhat is the current leader mainly cause of he is the ST ace. But Id say, Cherelus has the same % to make the roster.  CB has the recent wavier claim of MJ Devonshire a 2024 7th rounder. He's got the good-great combine numbers but he's small size. Still he's in the mix for backup duties, in fact all the non-UDFA are wavier claims.  ______________________________________________________________   Dam shame about Clowney. I view this as a bad move. I feel clowny is well worth the 7.7, even as a backup. He played hard the whole year without help. I just feel he would have helped more than either DJ Johnson or Barno.  My only cope is he's 32 and at any point his miro-knee could force him to drop off a cliff performance-wise. I wanted to keep him around at least until the trade deadline and if no chance at playoff, flip him for a anything. NFL is a meat grinder, no love for locals....
