Tepper on developing talent

From Max Henson on Panthers.com...

Remember Tepper said Marty Hurney was one of the best "recognizers" of college talent. Well now the staff is said to include "some of the best developers of talent in the league". This despite the fact that they have yet to coach a single game together and there's precious little NFL coaching experience to even be found on the staff

It's cool to be encouraging and supportive and all, but I'm one that prefers to keep it somewhat realistic. As far as real analysis though, I'm gonna guess that he doesn't actually believe this statement just yet.

If he does, I hope he's right because otherwise...yikes :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

it's called being a politician and this seems more like what tepper is rather than a sports owner. maybe he took up the wrong industry.

The other part of this is that in college you can have 100+ players on your team. You can afford to sit guys for a year or two while they develop. In the NFL you have to get production out of most if not all of your players, almost immediately. Maybe a few physical freaks can come in an contribute on special teams for a year or two while waiting to develop at their positions but if they blow up in year 3 or 4, then they are likely a free agent. It likely hasn't been focused on enough in the past but I'm not sure it can be the end all, either.

Correct. Plus you don't really have to worry about guys leaving for a better contract at another college.

The issue is preaching patience while turning around and pushing a franchise quarterback out the door while speculation runs rampant about us offering a massive extension to a running back when we are facing a looming void behind center. If you want fans to be patient have some kind of plan in place and follow it. This TMZ level back and forth through the media with one of the most important players in franchise history is a stain that could take some time to wash away if this gets any uglier.

I am both excited and horrified at the direction of this franchise.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me.

Yep, he’s willing to take shots.

I personally love it, but a lot of fans will hate it. The wine and cheese crowd loves some 8-8 10-6 seasons with a first round playoff loss.

It's all bound up for me in one thing...

Despite his "I know how stupid I am" comments, I have little doubt that David Tepper firmly believes he's always the smartest guy in the room. And when it comes to financial and business matters, he's probably right.

Football? Well...that remains to be seen.

But if there's one thing I know for certain, it's that few if any can do as much damage as a leader who thinks he's smarter than he actually is.

If you doubt that, I'd point you to the Cleveland Browns since Jim Haslam took over or the post salary cap Dallas Cowboys under Jerry Jones.

Cam will be back, man. No doubt. This is all by design to increase Cam's legacy.

I don't even believe Cam has been hurt. Look at when he supposedly injures his foot .. it is nothing.

We had to crash and burn to have a reason to fire Rivera and to change this franchise into revolutionary and offensive.

So Tepper can't be right because of the lack of NFL experience,  or the lack of you agreeing with him, or both?

Like I said yesterday, it seems pretty clear to me that this is the full on Tepper show. Marty is being retained because he's willing to be a rubber stamp for Tepper and he makes the perfect fall guy if it all blows up spectacularly. I just cannot be convinced that anyone as intelligent and analytical as David Tepper can look at Hurney's track record and conclude anything other than he's just plain not a good NFL GM. There's a reason why no one touched him after we fired him the first time around.

He disagrees with you, and you can't wrap your mind around that?

I'm not saying that.

Again, I said that I hope he's right, but there's zero evidence at this point whether what he's saying is right or wrong.

It's like saying Joe Burrow is already the best quarterback in the NFL. Maybe he will be, but there's no factual basis for it.

Your right. They aren't proven in the pros. When are you going to give that a rest, and enjoy the ride?
