Matt Miller: many sources around league believe Panthers will attempt to "tank" for Trevor Lawrence

A Cam Newton led team will not tank for draft picks and honestly the only teams that do trade away every single valuable asset that they have like the Dolphins did last year. No way we make the Okung trade if we were "tanking for Lawrence" if only people were held accountable for the crap journalism work they do

If you “tank” for a player, and that player is a bust, you just set your franchise back for many years. Lawrence should be good, but like any NFL QB he will need the right system/staff/players around him to succeed. Basically if they tank for Lawrence and he doesn’t play well it would turn into an entire staff change again. I don’t see anyone gambling on that...

Dolphins are a good example. They are rebuilding, which led to trading away their old players for draft picks. However they started Fitzpatrick to win games because no franchise/coach wants to intentionally lose. College players are always a gamble. Imagine if a team tanked for Ryan Leaf, or Jamarcus Russell...

Its not tanking its rebuilding.  And of course you couldnt post without an insult.

Rebuilding the roster is not the same as actively trying to lose.

I dont think they are actively trying to lose but they fully expect it for the coming season.

Tepper has said it and sent the message to PSL owners.  Its coming.

Some fans seem to be confused about what the term tanking actually means when they throw that around.

Initially David Tepper used the word rebuild and terminology like that, but I read recently after the Okung trade that inside the Panthers building it isn't totally a forgone conclusion that they won't be competitive.

Either way, there is a significant difference between what Tepper initially said, and fans believing that means we are tanking for Lawrence.

He said it 17 days ago.  He knows and most anyone with eyes know its going to be a long year.   I am not sure how getting a 32 yr old LT that was hurt the bulk of last season changes that.

 

Look at vegas, they currently have has tied for being the 3rd worst team at 100/1 odds for the super bowl.  How often are they that wrong?  Last year in the same slot they had Skins, Miami, Cincy and the Cardinals.

How are you getting "Yep we're tanking for Lawrence" out of "It won't happen overnight"?

I doubt Tepper does half measures.  Whats the point of winning 6 games in a rebuild?  Sometimes you have to read between the lines.  If you know you are going to suck, if you tell your fans you are going to suck, then why not try and suck for a generational talent?  I mean it makes sense to me, its making sense to some national writers its just not clicking with some on here.  Give it time, it will though once we get into FA, the draft and this summer.  I mean we literally just signed a journeyman end on a one year deal.

Tbh even if we were considering torpedoing an entire season and further nosediving our already struggling team culture, from my perspective after watching the LSU game, I dont think Lawrence is the guy for that. Is he a generational talent? If I were considering that kind of approach it would be for someone that put the team on their back like Newton did with Auburn in 2010. That's why despite all the bullshit attempts at hyping up other scrubs like Jake Locker or Blaine Gabbert by the talking heads, the guy who was the centerpiece in lifting his team to a national championship was always the top selection. But there's no Cam Newton coming out next year unfortunately.

2. Just because you dont think TL is a generational talent it doesnt mean he isnt.  Just because you saw one game and were not impressed doesnt really carry any weight.  He is 20 and universally regarded as one of the best prospects in close to a decade if not more.  Sorry you dont see it.
