Saints game plan for steve smith

Just wondering if anyone else has seen Williams comments on how to "cover" Smitty on Sunday.

From NOLA.com (http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index...540.xml&coll=1 ):

Quote:

COVERING STEVE SMITH: Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith has been perhaps the biggest thorn in the side of the Saints recently. In his past eight games against the Saints, Smith has caught 52 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns.

Those numbers haven't been lost on Williams, who also has been victimized by Smith in the past.

"He's an unbelievable football player," Williams said. "He does things that obviously you can't coach. They are going to do two or three things that we haven't even seen on film, where they try to scheme a big play to him.

"The thing that I think that he does the best is, for a little guy when the ball goes up in the air, he plays like a 6-10 center. He goes and gets it. But what we've got to do is turn his little body over, so that when he does get it he lands on his head and he doesn't come back in for a while."

Williams said he is confident the Saints' starting cornerbacks, Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter, will be able to defend Smith.

"Our corner play has been outstanding, so we are not afraid of putting our corners out there," Williams said. "There will be some plays that he makes, and there will be some plays that we make. We just have to hope that it's not a point-producing play."

Sounds like a plan to me!

i don't want any saints fans coming in here talking about class.

what a lame way to coach.

i could talk about all we have to do is break their already fragile players but i didn't want to stoop so low.

so much for wanting an injury free game.

i will say that if the panthers read this and smith gets hurt, i can guarantee a couple key saints players are going to be getting hurt. you want a fight, the panthers are going to give you one.

Saints corners are good enough to slow down Smitty. Saints will probably do what the Eagles did earlier this year.
eagles didn't gameplan to hurt smith.

i wonder what fines there are for a coach to make a hit list. it's pretty stout for a player. for a coach it should be a lot higher.

Thats called put a SS over the top to help the CB. No CB in this league can cover Smith one on one. People have tried and lost every time. Only Smith and Randy Moss have that talent. What the dirty Williams dose not know is Smith takes licks all the time. Hell Ed Reed laid the wood too him 3 years back and Smith just got up and patted him on the helmet. Im sorry no Saints CB or SS is gonna put Smith out without a cheap shot and that's a fact.

Ha your the deranged one. We shut down Fitz and Bolden dont think we cant shut down Colston. You guys are gonna be dumping passes off all game long. Dink and dunk is the only way your gonna win.

    • I presented that scenario because this is a home game and we seemed to have improved in some capacity in that area as of recently. The problem with the possibility of sweeping the Bucs is this team has had a habit of quickly falling victim to momentum shifts. The Bucs are coming off a bitter loss the same as the Panthers but the Bucs have a much better proven track record this time of year and they have performed when the pressure is on unlike our Panthers. We have a shot against the Seahawks here in BOA but that is a matchup that could quickly get out of hand because they are a well coached team and that goes back to the momentum shifts I mentioned. I just don't see this team beating the Bucs in their stadium to close the season. Tall order to say the least.
    • I’d give it another year for Sanders and Evans, I don’t much care what you do with Tremble’s spot. Let him have another year or maybe replace him. Haven’t looked at his contract so that may be the determining factor.
    • Following the crazy up down pattern we finish 9-8 with an improbable sweep of TB, and lay an egg in the home playoff game.  I don’t know if I can sign on to sweeping TB but I suppose it’s possible, they aren’t really that good this year.    ps I can buy beating TB Sunday and losing to Seattle.  Then it just gets to can you fluke one game. Any given Sunday. So we’ll see.
