Gano and Syle have the same problem.  Both have real big legs that can make 50+ yard FG with no problem but both have had problem with short FG and XP.  Is it a mental thing?  Is it they hit the ball to hard?  I don't know.  If someone knows something about kicking let me know because it would be interesting to know.

They are average NFL kickers.

If only we drafted a young, consistent guy in the late rounds to kick for us.

I bet that would work out as long as we kept him and didn't hold on to an older, injured guy coming off his worst season on the team.

Right guys?

Guys?

Yep. Butker is looking like a rock solid longer term franchise kicker. Of course that could change in no time if his confidence is shaken at some point (Blair Walsh looked like the next big thing and I don't even think he's in the league now), but Chiefs kicking situation is definitely set and something they can be pretty damn confident in compared to most other teams. Butker may be 2nd to only Justin Tucker in terms of kickers I'd want long term right now. Unbelievable we let him go. Actually, it's not. We have Hurney...

Every one always blames cutting Butker on Hurney.  Cutting a young guy with talent for a veteran guy sounds a whole lot like Ron.  Not sure that was really a Hurney call.

For large majority of the guys who even make it to the NFL it's all mental. You can't even get this far without having a solid leg and consistent technique for shorter field goals. Some guys just can't handle the pressure or get in their own head when they miss. It's not like other positions where mistakes can easily get swept under the rug by media/fans. All eyes are on the kicker and every single mistake is amplified, even more so when it's a clutch FG attempt. Most these guys just can't handle that.

Ehh... We'll never know for sure but at the end of the day Hurney was the GM and had final say over the roster. Plus Ron/DG were involved in drafting Butker, Hurney wasn't. Seems more likely the one who didn't have input into drafting Butker was the one who made the call on cutting him, not Ron who was involved in acquiring Butker.

Ideally, you want your angle higher on shorter kicks to avoid blocks. At 50+ you do not have that choice.

But I still say it is 97% in the head in the form of "I have to make this kick" VS "It is a bonus if I make this kick".
