Did keeping Cam Newton so long tank Hurney?

We really didn't keep Cam too long at all. We moved on from him at the perfect time if you ask me. First half of 2018 he was still really good, then he started to show some concerning signs with the shoulder and wound up needing another surgery on it. You don't move on from him then based off of that, and he was still on a cheapish deal for a starting QB. 2019 you gave him another shot to rebound (right decision) and he couldn't play more than 2 games and then we decided to move on. As far as timing with Cam we handled it perfectly. Unfortunate situation but the team handled that very well.

I agree our timing was good and it was time to move on from Cam, I think we could have handled the situation with more class.  Obviously we don't know all the inside details, but it didn't "feel" very good outside looking in for the fans.

I highly doubt that this was the reason Hurney got the axe.  I agree with onmyown, it was the entire body of work, not a single move.  There may have been strong disagreement on that topic at the time, and Hurney may have been on the losing side of that disagreement, but that is speculation and most likely would not have been enough to seal his fate.

I do not watch the draft.  To me, it is like watching a car rusting contest.  Those who did said that at one point last year, it looked like Hurney stormed away from his computer as we were getting ready to make a pick.  If so, it highlights the difference between Hurney and Rhule, and Tepper, too, for that matter.  Maybe it is a power struggle, maybe nothing more than a difference in philosophies.

Hurney never demonstrated enough respect for the draft after round 1.  How many times do you go searching for diamonds in the rough, and trading up to get them, and have it blow up before you begin to realize finding those nuggets is not your strong suit?  I'm not saying those finds are not there, just that he has not demonstrated an ability to find them.  But as he flailed around looking for diamonds, holes grew in the roster.

Let's put it this way: you are a company and you are about to hire seven people.  You are hoping that out of the seven, you get three or four that are long-term employees.  But your hiring manager consistently loses focus after the first hire.

I also think he approached free agency with an eye on the player's past rather than thinking about what or how they will do moving forward.  If somebody is a FA, a random thought about "why" is in order.  Is it money?  OK.  Is it them wanting out of a bad situation for them? OK.  Is it the former team determining they are not worth the money and/or their best years are behind them?  Time to think a bit. 

I don't think the concept of value ever entered into his decisions.

The Huddle's indictment of him is not a single charge.  I doubt that Tepper's decision was made on one, either.
