Dodds is out

My one concern with Dodds was that he struck me as somebody that could conceivably be difficult to work with. He's a guy who's extremely driven, and Matt Rhule strikes me as a little more laid back.

Hiring Dodds as a GM would have been kind of like hiring Steve Smith as a coach. You'd absolutely respect his drive, but someone that intense can wear on you after a while.

Yep.  I just get the sense that Peters' style is a better fit with Rhule.  He's always been a collaborative guy, and that seems to be what Rhule is all about.  I think they would work well together, and them being friends would also be positive.

Of course, it might not be Peters at all, I think Ireland's chances of getting the gig are pretty high as well.  And the fact that he already has a relationship with Rhule indicates that they would also likely be a good fit.

I'm sure some of the other candidates are serious contenders, but I just have a feeling that when all is said and done, it will be either Peters or Ireland.  Relationships are important to Rhule, so I expect whoever we hire to have a strong history with him.

I'd agree. Would also be okay with Joe Schoen.

If it's somebody out on left field or one of the guys that doesn't have a true personnel evaluation background, it'd make me wonder if Tepper overruled his coach. Mind you, I'll still hope for the best in that case, but I won't have as much confidence.

If it's Peters, Ireland or Schoen though, I'll be feeling pretty good.

We definitely need someone with a history in player evaluation.  I'm on board with a guy that believes in analytics, but you need a guy that can evaluate talent.

The thing with GM's that are not talent evaluators, but more of managers (like Marty was) is that they have to rely on coaches and scouts to identify the best prospects.   The problem is that coaches come late to the evaluation party and tend to fall in love with guys, while top scouts eventually move on to bigger and better things (often on the GM track themselves).  So, that non-evaluating GM now either has to try evaluating themselves, without the basic skillset, or rely on somewhat unreliable coaches and newer scouts.

Give me a guy any day that can identify talent himself, and let the coaching and scouting staffs augment his evaluations.

Peters said something interesting in his profile article on The Athletic. He mentioned that Kyle Shanahan and other 49er coaches would actually give him specific things they wanted in a player, distinguishing between things like a pass catching tight end versus a blocking tight end, etc.

That's something I'd expect, but the interesting part was he said that he hadn't experienced that before joining the 49ers. In his previous jobs with the Patriots and the Broncos, coaches didn't communicate that sort of thing to him. He found it very helpful that Shanahan did.

I'd like to expect we do that here too, regardless of whom we hire.

I think we will.  Rhule is such a communicator that I think he will be very clear about what he wants.  It's why I think he needs a good collaborator to work with at GM.  I think he would clash with a take charge type of GM.  All he seems to want is to have legitimate input into roster decisions.  After all, he has to coach these players, so I believe he feels he has a right to have a say in who we bring in and who we let go.

All of which fits with Peters.

Perfectly fits.

Don't know if you have an Athletic subscription, but there's a really good profile of Peters from last year on their site. Other things that I've seen about him call him a "football savant".

One possible hitch: He grew up a 49ers fan, loves his job, loves the Bay Area, loves being part of the organization and could potentially be in line to succeed Lynch should he step down or be "promoted".

I'm not necessarily too worried about that though because I figure if he wasn't at least somewhat open to the possibility of leaving, he wouldn't have interviewed.

I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, I'm sure it would be tough for him to leave, but he most likely will have to leave for any GM job.  I just don't see Lynch going anywhere anytime soon.  He's young enough to be there for a while, and still building, so it will probably be a few years before he is moved upstairs.

The only issue is would Peters be willing to move across the country.  But like you said, he has to be at least somewhat interested, or he wouldn't have even interviewed.  Plus, I'm sure it would be appealing working with someone he's friends with who already knows the organization.  It would probably make the transition a little easier.

Yep.

I will admit he seems kind of mild mannered. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll back down in a disagreement, just something I've noted.

Dodds was the opposite, very "alpha male" in his persona. Like I said, basically Steve Smith as a GM. R Lee Ermey might be a good comparison too.

I thought of that too.  But I believe it's just that he is so easy going and it's probably a reason he works so well with others.  I'm sure he wouldn't have earned so much respect if he wilted whenever confronted with a different opinion.  So I think he'd be fine.

    • If anything it's pretty obvious what they need to work on, last offseason they just went straight in with blind faith and that backfired immediately. I can't imagine how many qb's that didn't make it in the league could have stuck around for a few more years with this long of a leash and investment in the pieces around them just to see if they can game manage at an acceptable level

    • Yeah, I think next year will be a semi-rebuild/bridge year until we get nikishkin here. But... If we are able to have those lines you have above next year, I will be thrilled.    Edit: I'm fairly certain Staal retires or goes to another team next year
