Why you don't fire John Fox

Fox proved his mettle after the 0-3 start this season. Again. He proves it every year. You have a bunch of people on here who forget your odds of going to the Super Bowl are 1 out of 16 and odds of winning it are 1 out of 32. Furthermore, the odds of going to the championship games are 1 out 8. In eight years, Fox has been twice. Odds of making the playoffs...three out of eight or .375. Fox has been three times in eight years. Barely missed every other year. Hasn't had that stinker year that makes fans give up on the team. But...because of that....hasn't had the top 10 picks that get you over the hump, either.

Your odds may be statistically correct, but I think you can eliminate a handfull of teams every year, which should then increase your odds.

I would be more impressed with Fox had we not dropped three in the first place.

Honestly, I don't think Fox is a bad coach. Maybe if we had a decent quarterback, we wouldn't be having this discussion -- but again, that still comes back to Fox.

Meat's on a roll.

I see it both ways and I can't decide, myself. I'll need the rest of the season to further evaluate the situation. It's certainly a tough call, and at this point I would completely understand the decision to keep him and the decision to fire him.

My biggest concern with keeping John is his inability to make halftime adjustments or show any kind of aggression when it's solely needed. The Cowboys and Saints games were proof positive that when it's in our best interest to be dictators instead of reactors to the game's pace, that he'll go into a passive shell and stick his head in the ground like a giraffe, hoping for the best.

There are certain positions he seems quite adept at drafting for--running back, linebacker, and to a lesser extent, offensive line.

There are, however, positions he and/or his coaching staff are abysmal at drafting for: wide receiver, quarterback, and I'd frankly say defensive tackle (Irvin in the third round as someone who only ever saw the field in college due to injury does not exactly inspire confidence).

To me, that's the other elephant in the room in as far as keeping him: these are absolutely vital positions, that should've been addressed a couple years ago, and pretty much have to be addressed in either this year's draft or next year's.

However, the failure of Keary Colbert, Drew Carter, Ryne Robinson, and Dwayne Jarrett (who has been adequate enough at everything but deep routes, and honestly, that's just maddeningly stupid. Sending a slow possession receiver who struggles with separation on a deep route?) at developing into competent receivers suggests that it's not just talent evaluation, but a sign that it may be time to move on from Williamson. But that begs a bigger question: why keep Jarrett when clearly he isn't being used much, and why not put Kenneth Moore on the field, erm, more, to see how he is in game situations?

I love the Panthers, but trying to understand them is like trying to read tea leaves for political advice.

LOL. Sorry, top 10 coaches actually get back-to-back winning seasons. Last years team would have been 8-8 or 9-7 if we didn't play the Raiders, Lions, Chiefs, and any other terrible team on our schedule.

If this is the case, there aren't a top 10 coaches list, b/c what 10 teams consistantly win? Is Caldwell automtically a top 10 coach now?

There aren't ANY coaches who have coached at least three years and never had a 6-10 or worse on their record. Oh wait....

Once this year is over, Mike Tomlin will be able to say otherwise.

And Wade Phillips and Ken Whisenhunt.

Sean Payton has not gone 6-10 in 3 plus years, Norv Turner has not gone 6-10 or worse either in 3 plus years in their current jobs.

Then you've got coaches like Andy Reid, Bill Belicheck, Tom Coughlin who've been putting up winning records for years.

This is as stupid as the Titan comparison.

    • Predictions from the Observer writers  i am sad   I wish the Panthers had one, just one, game changing hero on their roster …one player that isnt ok with losing …there aren't any Steves,, Lukes,  Cams, Thomas’ on this roster    When  a team has a roster and there isn't one jersey that sells, there arent any heroes if there are, today is a good day to show up   From the Oberser  Fowler: Packers 30, Panthers 20. Carolina will hang around for a while for this one, but the Packers — a legitimate Super Bowl threat — have just too much firepower. Kaye: Packers 31, Panthers 20. Green Bay feels like one of the true Super Bowl contenders in the NFC. The Packers’ offense is dynamic and the defense continues to improve. With a banged up O-line and an unpredictable defense, I’m not sure it matters who is at QB for the Panthers on Sunday. The Packers should win at home in convincing fashion. Zietlow: Packers 35, Panthers 28. I predicted last week that the Bills would win in lopsided fashion. They were coming off a two-game losing streak followed by a bye. The Panthers, conversely, were due for a regression after three great weeks. This week, after refocusing, I think the Panthers will put up a strong performance. I also think Rico Dowdle will get the majority of the carries and that the defense will play much better against the run. The Packers will still win, but the Panthers will leave Lambeau with their heads held high.
