Panthers haven’t fixed their problems in 2 years of Matt Rhule. They’re making new ones - at CO

11 players selected, but also traded away a 3rd and a 6th this year for Henderson and Gilmore.  I don't think the defense is terrible, but they aren't good enough considering we put near 100% of our resources into it.

Also it's not a good look when players are having to prompt the team's "best" coordinator to make basic adjustments to the defense in order to stem the bleeding.

This coaching staff needs to go... ASAP.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't think the defense is genuinely as good as what many have made it out to be.

Yes there's talent, but I'm not convincing Phil Snow is the defensive guru he gets credit for being. The initial dominance was countered with some fairly simple adjustments (going max protect, for example) and I've yet to see a truly effective counterpunch deployed from our end.

Heck, the last couple of games have served to make it look like we're just getting worse.

Yeah, this D has been slipping as the season progresses.  Snow is not looking nearly as competent as he once was.

In fairness most defenses slip as the season goes along if they aren't getting much support from the offense.

But I am not saying the defense is top five/great.  Just that it is significantly better than 2019, and somewhat better than last year when we went several games without forcing more than 1 punt a game.

I am also not saying Snow is great.  But when Rivera was hired, it took him more than two seasons to turn the defense around, and he was considered a NFL defensive specialist.  Might be unrealistic to expect a college coach to get it into a dominant position in less than two years, regardless of how many draft picks we spend on defense.  The reality is most NFL players don't really gel until their third year.  But the point is the defense has gotten better.

On the flip side, the offense and special teams have gotten worse.   Baffling decisions at qb, offensive line inconsistency, both in personnel and performance, and spending a high pick on a wide receiver just after paying a free agent wr a significant amount of money, and now we are going to have to pay DJ if we want to keep him.

I wonder how much Brady had to do with these decisions, and if they were part of the reason he was canned.

The defense has the talent but Snow is too limited to use them to their full potential. Commentators and other players were saying from early in the season that what we do on defense isn’t special, it’s just not done in the NFL much. And now we’re seeing why. Opponents have adjusted and our scheme can’t handle it.

Well, we're about to find out what if anything Nixon can do to improve the offense.

When it comes to comparing Rhule and Rivera, I'm gonna be more critical of Matt than I was of Ron, simply because Rhule insisted on having total control as a rookie HC.  With authority comes responsibility.  We once could debate who was responsible between Ron or Marty.  Today, there is only one person that is ultimately responsible, that's Matt Rhule.

Nixon could be the best offensive coordinator of all time and I am still not sure he could improve our offensive performance significantly in five games.  But if he does, then we will know that play calling was a big part of the problem as that is the easiest thing to change.  Personnel and play design can be tweaked, but I doubt we could see significant changes in that regard.

It's a tall order for Nixon, no doubt.  If he really is an improvement over Brady it begs the question as to why Rhule chose the guy over Nixon to begin with.

In the same vein, I don't fault Rhule for wanting full control anywhere near as much as I do David Tepper for giving it to him.

Yeah, the Jets insisted on input into Rhule's coaching staff and the Giants refused to give Matt such a lucrative contract.

Dave, on the other hand, took the road less traveled and that has made all the difference.

Given our situation, that reference comes off less like Robert Frost and more like Mr Freeze.

Well, in fairness, all three teams suck, so I am not sure it made much of a difference.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
