If we draft a QB, I want Carson Strong

He does not do well under pressure, and cannot evade it, not a good combination. He also has shown he has trouble executing outside of the pocket at all, to include boot legs. Injury history is the cherry on top. A big pass for me, you cannot operate in the NFL as a young QB with no mobility or ability to make plays outside the pocket, it just doesn't work.

What is your thoughts on Matt C ?

You evade pressure by putting the damn ball in the air to a running player, not necessarily running it yourself.

Strong steps up in the pocket and he moves around in the pocket and has an elite arm.

All the people talking about mobility and pressure. How is he still putting up very good numbers and giving us great tape like the Op has provided if he was soooooo flawed?

Carson Strong is the prototype NFL QB. He checks all the boxes for a QB except for open field Cam style running.

Dude had a 70% completion percentage two years in a row. I can't remember a Panthers QB who has done that.

Everything I can see, injury but hasn't missed games, 70%completion two consecutive years, 4000+yds 36TDs 8int, coach allowing him to check into and out of plays independently. That all says, tough, grinder, high IQ, self disciplined, all at a young age.

This SHOULD be QB1

Add to that NFL QB prototypical size at 6'4" and serious armstrength, nice touch.

I know Willis is your guy. Who else do you like in this QB class. I’m probably (In order) Willis, Howell, Pickett, Corral/Strong, Ridder with a strong curiosity on Glass.

I love Willis obviously lol

I am okay with Pickett, Howell, or Corral in the bottom of the first. I think Pickett and Corral have the highest chance of success in the NFL. Ridder has shown enough for me personally. Glass is a later round flyer, but there could be something there.

So, it’s a lofty goal for sure, but it’s one that those around Strong certainly haven’t ruled out as a possibility.

“If a quarterback is above a 65% in completion percentage, I’m happy,” Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Mumme said. “If we’re throwing for 70%, we’re probably pretty successful. He’s a kid that backs up a lot of what he says.”

Strong has been impressive throughout his college career in several aspects, but particularly in that area, recording a 70.1% completion percentage in 2020—a nearly 7% jump from the season before. Mumme describes him as one of the most “savvy” quarterbacks he’s ever had.

“He’s a smart guy academically, but he’s also extremely smart on the football field,” Mumme said. “He’s probably the most savvy quarterback knowledge-wise against defenses I’ve ever had. He’s a guy who is very energetic, very interactive with all of his teammates. I’ve had other quarterbacks who are still interactive with their teammates, but not quite in the same way".

YES! Yes all day. Just what I thought. Special.

Strong!

All well and good, but he did not do that in college. His numbers are not good under pressure, and the tape tells you that as well. Does he step up well in the pocket? Yeah sometimes. Other times he just kind of stands there and takes sacks. I'm not trying to hate on Strong, because I do like him, I just think we are kidding ourselves with the idea that he is this day one starter that is going to be an excellent passer out of the gate. He needs a year to fix things, and even then you are working with a limited upside. How a quarterback responds to pressure is huge, and Strong is a mixed bag in that regard.

Look at that article. GRINDER,HIGH IQ. This guy has all the physical tools plus can really really sling it.

Panthers have done a lot of dumb things. Investing in a Drew Brees level grinder, high IQ plus prototype 6'4", tough, determined. Those are the characteristics of a good/great NFL QB. I like that his coach says he's high IQ. That's all I needed PLUS that arm!?

As a junior he's used his opportunity to make a pretty impressive college run. I wouldn't doubt that such an impressive individual wouldn't be able to adapt, especially when they are great at understanding, so I wouldn't really be concerned with that one stat when all the others are above average.

When the weeds are separated from the chaff I think Strong is going to jump.

Any year if you somehow woke up and you look at this tall kid slinging it way down field with touch and close to 70% accuracy with 4186 actual yards and 36 actual TDs actually playing the QB position three years having had a surgery or two but hasn't missed games because of that. He'd be baby Andrew Luck.

Would it be STUPID for the Panthers to draft Carson Strong at six? It would be a very cool JERSEY and a very talented arm. Yes. He IS a gun slinger. At least he has a gun. Would it be the most stupid thing the Panthers have done in the last four years? No.

There are multiple QBs that fill all those requisites you listed. Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, etc etc are all high IQ grinder quarterbacks. You sort of have to be to be ultra productive in college like these guys were. Malik's coach talked about that the other day.

His stats are a product of his system.  There have been a ton of qbs with great stats that flop in the NFL.  That are not indicative at all in regards to the translation of an NFL qb.  Plus he was in shotgun for the majority of his snaps.  There are a ton of red flags with him and just because he has a good that doesnt mean poo.

Oh and how is Trask doing btw?  Why are the Bucs looking for another QB if they have the best one from the 2021 draft?

I like Strong, but the grinder/high IQ should apply to most first round QBs unless they are just in a league of their own with intangibles. Sure there are some that don’t prep/work on their craft, but most have to in order to make it this far.

I personally hated Trask as a prospect last year.

    • Lawn boy he is trash! Dude wants to run the ball with the 25th ranked run offense. We can go back to Bryce talk now. Close!
    • I thought Matt Rhules felt like a traveling preacher/sewing machine salesman. Then I thought Reich had the emotions of the captain of a baby seal clubbing team. I kind of like Canales and think he may be adaptable in today's NFL. I know we need to to see it but does he not give you guys hope too, or will he get his moniker too? (My bad, tired of looking at the same thread titles)
