Tony DeAngelo Traded To The Flyers

Rumors are that the Canes viewed TDA is a third pairing defenseman who is a PP specialist.

Not saying that Joey Keane would come close to replicating TDA’s success but I’d assume he’ll get a chance along with Gardiner to be that third pairing PP specialist.

One thing is for certain, the Canes are in need of a 1D.

Slavin - ?

Skjei - Pesce

Gardiner - Chatfield/Keane

Jake Gardiner no longer needs to be part of this equation. If the Canes keep him, it looks like pure desperation and a lack of confidence they can sign a quality D-man as well as a couple forwards.

I'd give Ethan Bear a full, healthy season on the roster before I'd go with Gardiner. Here's a list of right-handed UFA D-men... and this looks like a no-win unless Carolina signs Klingberg.

How the F does Klingberg have 47 points AND a +/- of -28. That’s insane.

Look at how the Stars started the season and how they finished- like a tale of two teams. Without looking, I'd bet Klingberg got more than half his points in the first half of the season and got most of his PIM during the second half.

I think it would be wise to at least give Gardiner the ability to compete in camp.

I mean....is Bear in the equation? Last I heard he was suffering "long COVID" symptoms, which doesn't bode well for next year. Most of the people that have had that battled it for a long time if they aren't still battling it.

I've read something similar, but I don't know if he's been officially diagnosed. I've having the same issues, and I've spoken with my personal physician a couple times during my annual physicals since I was sick in November 2020, and I've not gotten an actual diagnosis. What difference would it make? It's not like anyone can do anything about it.

I hope that's not the case with him.- he's a good kid and I think he has a future on the ice.

It was stated on WRAL last night and this morning the money was the sticking point. If true, then I'm shocked the Canes couldn't or wouldn't pony up $5M a year- 2 years, which is what TDA signed for in Philly.

Show me a free agent D-man with numbers even close to his 51 points last season who's available for $5M.

Don't bother looking- there isn't one.

I’m getting tired with Waddell’s attempts to lowball everyone.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
