Me, too. Me, too.

If this one doesn't work out, though, we need to draft center first next season. We'll never be able to coach up a franchise QB if he doesn't have a center that he can depend on.

Things like this are why I don't like getting cute in the draft. Just get the guy you need to get. We need a center. We've needed a center. Don't try and screw NO out of taking TMJ. Just get your center.

i dont think in the scenario I just described he would have 3 straight losing seasons..? I believe I just stated if he got the team to playoffs this year with the schedule we have.... he should get a 4th year.. I dont think you can get to the playoffs this year with a losing record.

Yeah, I was mistaking your first sentence and second sentence for the same scenario.

If we did make the playoffs(with a winning record and not back in at 8-9), I think he will be back. Not sure I personally would bring him back but I would understand bringing him back.

Much like you said, I don't see that as a real possibility of happening. I figure we will be somewhere in the 5-8 win range.

The wild card here is David Tepper.

Even if we went 4-12 or worse, would it really surprise you all that much if Tepper decided Rhule just needed another year to get things going?

I mean, Jay-Z needed at least seven years to build Rome in a day, right? 😖

I know. I am concerned about that, as well.

I do think he is aware enough of how he is viewed and will get to hear the chorus of boos and see the empty stands. I think he will realize he can't just let that continue.

I agree with whoever said that McAdoo and Campen should be able to navigate Elfein fir a game if needed. He's been serviceable there in the past.

Get Mays up to speed too.

From the Five Things to Watch at New England: Assessing for depth article:

"Mays also got some more work at center in Wednesday's practice, so the Panthers have options to show against New England."

Well why should he get another year? What NFL coach has had three straight losing seasons to start their career and then suddenly built a contending team?

Well...

Most SB winning coaches have won out of the gate, or at most 1 losing season, before turning their SB winning franchise into a contender.

Winning seasons out of the gate: Vince Lombardi, Hank Stram, Don McCafferty, Don Shula, John Madden, Tom Flores, Joe Gibbs, George Seifert, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, Brian Billick, John Gruden, Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy, John Harbaugh, Gary Kubiak, Andy Reid, and Sean McVay.

1 losing season before contending: Mike Ditka, Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Doug Pederson, and Bruce Arians.

The exceptions to this are Pete Carroll, Dick Vermeil, Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Walsh with only 2 losing seasons before having a winning team. Three of these coaches had their QB in place year 1.

3 Chuck Noll, Weeb Ewbank

5 Tom Landry

Walsh and Johnson had their SB QBs in place their first year. Carroll and Noll had their SB QBs by year 2. Vermeil and Ewbank by year 3. Landry by year 10, but he had Don Meredith in place going into the SB era.

The rule here is if a HC does not win in year 1, doesn't have a QB in place by year 2, and doesn't have a top of the league defense with defensive leaders set by the end of year 2, then you dump them and move on.

Rhule has 2 losing seasons under his belt, has yet to find his QB, and has yet to find his defensive leaders to build around. It's not going to happen, and there is no reason to keep him short of a miracle SB winning season. He should already be fired if the franchise is serious about winning championships.

SB winning coaches and QBs don't take 3 years to be championship contenders.

    • Here’s a summary of the JJ and Luke podcast transcript. Opening / Bryce Young Fifth-Year Option     •    JJ: Breaking news — Panthers picked up Bryce Young’s fifth-year option at $25.9M, guaranteed, coming in 2027. Combined with his 2025 salary of ~$6M, that’s $31M over two years — called it a “no-brainer.”     •    Luke: Enthusiastic about the move. Highlighted Bryce’s improving TD/INT ratios (11/10 → 15/9 → 23/11) and the value of entering year three with Dave Canales. Noted $25M is a bargain relative to the $60M top of market. Luke’s Personal Update — Charlotte Christian Football     •    Luke: Working with Charlotte Christian school football program, which hired a new head coach. Coaches include Greg Olsen, Luke, and Greg’s dad Chris Olsen (a New Jersey State coaching Hall of Famer).     •    JJ: Jokingly quipped that Charlotte Christian’s coaching staff is “the world’s greatest” — a Fox analyst, a Hall of Famer, and the best Panthers RB ever — all coaching middle school football.     •    Luke: Praised Chris Olsen’s deep football knowledge spanning decades and his ability to connect with kids. Round 1, Pick 19 — Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia     •    JJ: Panthers were on the clock and submitted their pick almost immediately — a sign of confidence and preparation. Freeling is 6’7”, 320 lbs, played in the SEC in a pro-style system.     •    Luke: Loved the pick. Emphasized you can never have too many quality offensive linemen. Noted Freeling’s size, athleticism, and arm length as key traits. Said the pick also reflects team’s philosophy of drafting great people, not just great players.     •    JJ: Noted reporter Darren Gantt compared Freeling favorably to Jordan Gross — bigger, heavier, and faster — as a potential franchise left tackle.     •    Luke: Pointed out that young players like Freeling still have physical development ahead of them, comparing the trajectory to Christian McCaffrey’s growth from age 20 onward. Round 2, Pick 49 — Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech     •    JJ: Panthers traded up from 51 to 49 (pick swap with Minnesota) to grab Hunter. Played audio from Panthers area scout Kaden McLuhan, who scouted Hunter.     •    Scout Kaden McLuhan (audio): Said Hunter’s size is immediately striking, and that everyone around him spoke glowingly about his character, energy, and love for the game.     •    Luke: Praised Hunter as a massive (6’3”, 320 lbs, ~34” arms) two-gap nose tackle who fits perfectly in the Evero defense. Compared his prospect profile to Akiem Hicks. Said having Derek Brown, Bobby Brown, Derrick Brown, Terson Wharton, and now Hunter creates varied body types that stress offensive linemen.     •    JJ: Noted Hunter ranked third among all prospects in run-stuff rate and sixth in interior pass-rush win rate — addressing a perception that he couldn’t rush the passer. Rounds 3–7 Highlights     •    Luke: Highlighted WR Brazle (3rd round, 6’4”, 437 speed, 1,000+ yards at Tennessee) as the vertical threat the offense needed. Also praised OL Sam Heck (5th round) as a technically sound player whose “short arms” caused him to fall but who has proven himself.     •    Luke: Mentioned CB Will Lee (6’1”, 33” arms) fits the Panthers’ DB prototype — big, long corners.     •    Luke: Praised S/LB hybrid Zaki Wheatley (5th round, 6’3”) as a big nickel similar to Trayvon Merek.     •    Luke: Excited about the linebacker competition between Devin Lloyd, Trevvin Wallace, and Claudin Cherless.     •    JJ: Noted Panthers had the #1 “steal/overreach” rating in the entire draft — drafting players lower than consensus big boards projected. Around the League     •    Luke: Admitted being “a little jealous” that the Miami Dolphins drafted LB Jacob Rodriguez (Luke’s favorite LB in the draft). Has personal connections to Miami’s coaching staff (Jeff Hafley, DC Shawn Dugen — a childhood teammate).     •    Luke: Also noted Miami’s selection of OT/G Kaden Proctor out of Alabama, who will likely move to guard. League Trends — Bigger Tight Ends / 12 & 13 Personnel     •    JJ: Observed the NFL saw its highest run rate in ~11 years (~52%) and a notable pivot toward big blocking tight ends in this draft.     •    Luke: Explained the cyclical nature of NFL offense/defense evolution — as defenses get smaller to match spread offenses, teams counter with bigger personnel (12/13 formations), which then forces defenses to get bigger at the nickel/“big nickel” spot. Called it an ongoing arms race.
