Tanking does not guarantee a good QB

It takes being in position to take the guy you want.  That's all that matters.  You don't want to feel like a guy fell into your lap or you're settling.  You're in position, and get the guy you want.

Brady is an outlier so with that in mind, just look at the final 4 QBs in recent years...don't even know what this means, if anything shows coaching matters just as much, but it's a lot of high end R1 QBs:

2021: Mahomes (R1), Burrow (1 Overall), Stafford (1 Overall), Jimmy G (R2)

2020: Rodgers (R1), Brady, Allen (R1), Mahomes (R1)

2019: Tannehill (R1), Mahomes (R1), Rodgers (R1), Jimmy G (R2)

2018: Goff (1 Overall), Brees (R2), Brady, Mahomes (R1)

2017: Bortles (R1), Brady, Cousins (R4), Wentz/Foles (R1/2)

2016: Rodgers (R1), Ryan (R1), Ben (R1), Brady

2015: Palmer (R1), Cam (1 Overall), Peyton (1 Overall), Brady

2014: Luck (1 Overall), Brady, Rodgers (R1), Russ (R3)

Can't wait until Brady retires...jeeez

Interesting. So Stafford, Goff, and Burrow are the only #1 overall picks to make it to the conference championships since Cam did it in 2015? Stafford and Goff both got there with McVay. Burrow willed his average team into it. It would be helpful to have the actual spots the R1 guys were taken, probably the most relevant guys going forward this year are Allen (pick #7) and Mahomes (pick #10)

I think people are giving a little too much thought into QBs that WIN the Super Bowl in association to drafting a QB. A lot has to go into one winning it all. Usually a great coach and good roster plus a little luck. When looking at our first round pick in a vacuum we just need the best QB available. Our staff needs to hire the right coach and build a solid team around him after that.
Rivers, McNair, Kelly, Marino, Moon all never won but that doesn’t mean Foles, Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Flacco were better picks.

We just need to draft the best QB available to us to make our team more competitive and then build around him and hope some things fall our way to win it all. Obviously we need to hire the right coach first.
Watson (before legal issues), Jackson, Herbert, Burrow, Allen, and Tua all look like great picks but several of these guys aren’t going to win one because only one team can win every year.

Disagree with this fully.

real fans will never leave and are smart enough to realize what needs to happen. Fair-weather fans will be the first ones back when this team starts winning again. The only thing that will cause irreparable damages is staying status quo and playing musical chairs with god awful quarterbacks. The true fans will lose their passion and walk away. We were seeing that with Matt Rhule.

believe me. Getting destroyed every game the rest of this season will not kill this franchise. My fellow fans from the beginning have been through a ton with this franchise and are still here.

If we can make it through Rae Carruth, the Fred Lane tragedy, The Kerry Collins drama, the Sean Gilbert trade, George Seifert, losing 15 games in a row, Marty Hurney 1.0, Steve Smith punching Ken Lucas, the John Fox lame duck year, Jerry Richardson punting a season for the good of the shield, Andrew Luck spurning the Panthers and going back to college, Gettleman cutting Steve Smith, Getttleman rescinding the franchise tag from Josh Norman, Jerry Richardson bringing back the idiot Marty Hurney, Greg Hardy, Jerry Richardson being a creep trying to shave employees legs, the absurd treatment of Cam Newton and cutting him, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfiled, and the entire Matt Rhule era then we will al survive tanking the rest of this season.

Based on what you wrote I wouldn’t say you disagree completely. You mentioned several things that have  currently hurt our franchise under Tepper and have caused our organizational demise. During the Chris Weinke year or Jimmy Clausen year I still don’t remember things being this low. Jerry was a creep in many ways, but even without talking to the media we could see his vision. Tough nose  defensive minded football team that wouldn’t quit. He knew when we stunk and made changes the following season to correct the mistakes that were made. No one knows if Tepper has a vision for our franchise. The things that he says does not match the people he employs or his actions. It’s been 5 losing seasons with this clown and without a clear direction our fan base is arguably at an all time low.

    • Same, bro.  Yeah, it just feels it has run its course and I don’t know that we’ll ever get more value.  Plus, with the new ownership, this draft has been super encouraging, so dare I believe maybe this FO can get something to really put us over the top in return for Melo.  I’ll still be a fan of his game and try to keep up with him if we move on, but yeah, I feel it’s time to turn the page. (and side note: I felt so happy after their rookie years because I told everybody I wanted Melo and didn’t trust Ant.  And Melo clearly looked like the better player early…  I thought Ant would bust because all that stuff he said about not loving the game and just his resume to that point…  but damn, if we could go back in time.🤣🤣🤣. I love Ant’s game and at times, when he gets in the zone, he is THE BEST player in the league in my opinion.)
    • Appreciate that, bro!  And I could definitely see that with Cam.  Even though he’s a little younger than me, he is also someone I admire and feel a kinship with for a lot of various reasons. Funny enough, a few years after that encounter with Steve, I went to Charlotte with one of my friends whose brothers owned a moving company at the time.  He dropped me off uptown and went to work the day with them where I would wait until he got done and then we were gonna go to the Bobcats game that night.  So I walk all through that area for hours.  After awhile, I walk back towards the arena and sit in a bench on the backside of the arena, where the practice court and player’s entrance was.  As I’m sitting there, I look up and almost think I’m seeing things - I squint and blink my eyes a couple times just to be sure, and yes…  it’s one of my childhood heroes, Muggsy Bogues walking across the crosswalk and into the arena.  I think he was coaching the Sting then, iirc.  Part of me wanted to just say, “Hey!  Muggsy!  Thank you for the inspiration and memories!  You were one of my favorite players as a kid!”  But, I just watched him walk by and into the arena and thought, “that was cool!”  I also so Miguel Cotto a couple years back while in Orlando and told my kids who it was but didn’t say anything to him.  I think somewhere in my subconscious, that encounter with Steve really made me feel like the gamble on finding out if they’re receptive to interaction just isn’t worth finding out.  At the end of the day, no matter if they’re receptive inspired us or were a hero, unless they initiate it, I likely never will…  because again, they’re humans just like us.  Not anymore unique or special, they just have a highly visible and very public job that we get to watch and in some ways participate.  So, I just appreciate it for what it is.
    • I'm pleasantly surprised they gave it to Bryce Young over Josh Allen. Finally we're getting some respect. Now I'm just hoping the team follows this up accordingly and doesn't lay another egg.
