Case for Koochie as our 1

I've been following Koochie's career in Russia for a while, pretty much since we drafted him. He's been great for us so far but I do think he needs more time fine tuning his technique and angles before we can really rely on him as our starter for a playoff run. He filled in admirably for a game in last year's playoffs against Boston but then really struggled vs NYR. He's pretty young for an NHL starting goalie as it is and still new to the North American game which has differences from playing in Russia, more time getting settled here either as an NHL backup or AHL starter I think makes the most sense.

However with Freddie out I'm 100% cool with a trial by fire here and hopefully he just continues this strong play, but I want to see a sample size of at least a dozen or two dozen starts with solid play before I'd declare him our #1. I absolutely think he can and will get there, I'm just not sure this season is the time quite yet. We will see how he does in the coming weeks/months if Freddie remains out though. Hopefully Rod keeps giving him ~50% of the games, splitting with Raanta.

I completely agree, Would like to see a string of multiple games of good play. I think he has moments of mental lapse at times which can lead to easy goals. At the same time he makes stops many won't lol. Going to be fun to see going forward anyway!

Bottom line is that he needs to play more, he’s an RFA at the end of the year so the Canes need to figure out if he can be at the very least a backup. I like what I’m seeing from Kochetkov but I’d keep all three goalies as of right now. Maybe move Andersen at the deadline if Kochetkov proves he can be a number one.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
