Re-Examining the Delhomme Extension

Mr. Scot

Agreed. Hurney and the FO arent idiots. Jake was 34 coming off what was then his worst season and a horrible meltdown in the playoffs. I seriously doubt they planned on him being the starter for even two more years.

Of course they're not idiots. That's why they gave $16 million for one season to Peppers when he was going to fly the coop next year anyway and they gave 5 years, $20 million guaranteed to Jake when he was already under contract for another season anyway. Nope, they're geniuses.

Once again I am going to say this and hope someone listens. I'm sure Fox wanted Delhomme and wanted to extend Delhomme but the fault goes on Hurney. It's the job of the GM to be the boss of the coach and make the tough choices that coaches won't or don't like to make.

If Hurney and Fox are tied together as much as people say they are and that forces Hurney to follow these bad choices then the Panthers need a new GM much more so than they need a new coach. This should have never even been a choice that Fox had more than an opinion in.

And really, if you're Marty Hurney is basically either Jake or no Jake. There was really no replacement this past offseason... despite what some may argue.

No, but there arguably was a good backup plan. He just happened to get hurt :(

Ive found myself wondering if Hurney's gamble wasn't with the uncapped year.

If he goes into the negotiations believing that the uncapped year is inevitable then that frees him to gamble that Jake is back and better than before. If Jake lives up to the deal all is good and its Smarty Marty. If he tanks they cut him loose and take the cap hit in a year that it doesn't cripple them.

I've wondered about that.

I'm never in favor of gambling cap space on things that might not happen. The 49ers and Cowboys tried that and it really bit them.

It's been said before. Conventional wisdom is that if one goes, both go.

So how many screw ups has Hurney had? How many number 1 picks have blown up in our face? Seems to me that Hurney has done a good job and is entitled to one screw up particularly when it could have worked out well instead of the other way around.

I have heard that if Fox goes so does Hurney, but I wonder why? Seems that Hurney was here before Fox so he could surely be here after. Unless he wants someone like Cowher who wants both jobs. Still I have heard Richardson doesn't like that, so I really wonder whether Hurney won't still be here.

Oh this is Darin Gantt garbage. They could have restructured his deal for this one season or extended him only through the 2010 season. To suggest that their only option was to give him a 5-year, $20 million guaranteed contract is asinine.

You can't restructure contracts that only have one year left. The whole point of restructuring, is that you move some salary of bonus' to different years that what they were originally set out for. So with just one season on the contract, there is no where else the money could go.

It was extend or nothing.

Extending just one year also acheives little as the money still can't really be moved much. So it was either a multi year deal or cut him loose.

Hurney needs to be gone long before Fox...but if both have to go...then farewell.

Hurney does not usually mess up the 1st round picks, that you can remember...but lets look at what he has brought in lately.

Otah

Stewart

Williams

Beason

Davis

Gamble

Out of those 6 picks, 4 of them are play it safe positions in the first round....LB and RB. Now lets look at that again, we have used 4 1st rounder lately on RB's and LB's....none on DL or QB...other than last years choice of Brown...who is an undersized DE, that we reached for because of bad choices made by Hurney in the First place.

Just so I am not hating too bad...those are all good/great players. The biggest problem I have with Hurney is not his first rounders, but the rest of the drafts of late. We needed depth like crazy, and we had to get it off of the street, instead of grooming our young draft picks...like most successful teams do.

Honestly, I really wonder how involved Hurney is in the draft. I think like other issues he simply goes to Fox and drafts who Fox tells him to draft.

I think Hurney is an amazing GM when it comes to managing the cap and working on contracts. But that is only part of what a GM is suppose to do.

In an ideal world I think Hurney getting a "promotion" and only handling the contracts and cap would be the best solution. What the Panthers really need is a GM that puts a championship team together. What the Panthers have now in my opionion is a coach also acting as a GM with Hurney taking all of the financial stress off of Fox.

    • For the right price… but if they did they would be pulling a Tepper, because they are trying to evaluate Shough and taking his best WR away is making it hard on him.
    • see we are just not going to agree - unless you change your mind lol. Mine isn’t changing without hard evidence that Morgan supported it like a puppy dog.  He was the assistant. If he disagreed and said so, and they didn’t listen, he has to pick his battles. If he continued to oppose he is looking for work. He knows this stuff. I think he knows Bryce is a super long shot just because he faced NFL QBs and probably would have salivated at the thought of Bryce on the other side in his playing days.  Anyway I am going to judge him on what he has done since he’s been the man with the title.  I also would bet a stack that there were conditions placed on him and on Canales re Bryce Young. Can’t prove it. I am not supporting the Brooks pick, and rationalizing the XL pick. And rationalizing the Brooks pick to an extent, on the (assumed by me) mandate that was a condition of the hiring. Which was ‘sell out’ to make Bryce work. This year. Now. (2024) That is what those top two picks were.  IMO. They failed, id judged today.  I think Morgan is doing a great job really, once he got his feet under him and was allowed to do his job.  Fixing this team while accommodating Tepper/Bryce, more than a two year fix.    Anyhow I have beer to drink will check back later.
    • Dolphins pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips: The Dolphins have received trade interest for both players, but could have an easier time trading Matthew Judon due to his more affordable contract
