Hurney's Biggest Mistake

Delhommey

Recommended Posts

Is now in my book taking Stewart with the 13th pick in the 2008 draft. It started a chain reaction that would leave the offense in the shambles it is in now.

People talk about losing the 1st rounder, but in my mind it was the second rounder that was the death blow. Don't tell me you wouldn't feel a little better with a Malcolm Kelly or a, God please yes, a Desean Jackson lining up across from Smith.

It seemed to be a no brainer to draft a tackle in the first and a back in the second or later. But let's go hindsight crazy here. How bout Otah, Jackson and Tashard Choice plus our first rounder in this past draft (and probably this one too). Sad when you think about it.

I like Stewart. Love him, really. But it was giving up way too much for what amounts to a luxury. A risky one at that. None of this is anything new, I know, but I just feel the jury's no longer out on this one.

It's like arguing about the fall of the British empire. It's something that had to happen but it's still fun to analyze.

I think Fox and Hurney did a better than average job but Hurney's gambling's left us in a hole. Not saying I would have done better (actually on this one thing I might have, but not anything else), but it was a pretty massive risk that failed.

You can't predict when the light switch will go on for players, as it did for DeAngelo. It could have just as easily gone on for Jarrett.

That being said, when the Panthers drafted Stewart, it seemed like they were giving up on a first rounder pretty early.

the Vinny T pep talk is the most overrated talk in the history of pep talks. Sure, it helped Williams.

however, it was obvious in 07 what Williams was.....and if Fox made the right move in 07 and gave Williams the ball more it would have been very obvious for him.

We owned the 13th pick, we didn't give anything up for Stewart, except the opportunity to draft a different player. No 2nd rounder involved there.

This is going to sound dumb but it looks like a mistake because we are losing. Brown and Stewart are and will be good players for us. There alot of things you could say we should have done in hindsight. Still I think Hurney is cap master and a good GM. Peppers and Jake were his biggest mistakes.

The 2007 season DWill averaged 5 yards a carry, the light was on.

I don't think Fox was a huge fan of DWill until last year. I know he wanted Mauroney but NE snatched him up right before our turn. Fox didn't think DWill was dependable as a feature back.

Drafting is so damn hard. And there's so much luck involved, not just in who you select, but who you select in front of. Dallas had their hearts set on a wide receiver named Jerry Rice once. SF jumped ahead of them by one and stole him away.

I can tell you this....the entire organization felt like they were the luckiest SOBs alive when Jarrett slid to them a few years ago. You just never know.

    • Yeah, if we could make it work, you sign him. All this talk about being a just above average QB is crazy. Dak is a top 10 QB, and his stats prove it. Give him a line and weapons, which we presumably have, and he'll be very good. I'm not going to ding a guy just because he's playing behind a good line and has a good wide receiver (as Dallas does). Dak is highly productive, and gives his team a good look every year.
    • I think Prescott is overrated as well. He is a lot better than anything we have. But it is so much money, I’d just steer clear.  I go withg what Frankw was saying, we need to keep plucking guys with potential from the draft board and cut down lists and one will hit.
