and he said - "he won't sign a long-term deal with the Carolina Panthers"

they were close to signing a long term deal right before the deadline before the season started. he backed off of that.

doesn't mean that he and his "agent" won't start the whole song and dance all over again, though.

I'd take a 2nd for Peppers, but we'd have to work out some kind of sign and trade since Peppers could sabotage any trade we work out by refusing to sign long-term with the other team.

If Peppers gives us the option to re-sign him I'm sure we'll do it and not even consider a trade. If he insists on leaving again then I doubt we'll franchise him @ 20 mil for 1 season, so I feel pretty confident we'd negotiate some kind of sign and trade with him.

wrong. we can tag and trade him. read up and get back to me.

Potentially yes, but he could sabotage any trade we work out by refusing to sign long-term with the other team. No team is going to trade high picks for a guy who won't sign a long-term contract with them.

I didn't say we couldn't tag him and trade him.

I said the new team would have to assume the exact terms and conditions the franchise tag contains. Then he becomes a UFA following that tagged year (just like this year). Best to know what you're talking about before responding.

IDT there will be a trade at this point. We have done this dance for the last two offseasons with him.

Honestly, unless we get him to sign a deal where he takes about 2/3 of what he is making now per year then it's not worth it. 10 million bucks a year for that guy is way too much money.

Like I said in an earlier thread...Let Pep walk and use that extra money to entice Bill Cowher into coming. I know it's not the same as the "cap hit" but its all money and its all coming from Richardson's pocket. So why not use a portion of that 16 mil to get the coaches we all want.

And you're still wrong. Did Cassell play for 16.45 million (what it would have been after he was franchised) this year when he was traded to the Chiefs? Nope. What about Jared Allen? Nope.

Please. stop.

The Peppers situation should and most likely will be played out like this: Long term contract negotiations will happen. This organization wants Peppers so he wont get away easily. Ive noticed allot more fire in his play over the last few weeks so this Ron Meeks system might be just what he needs to stay as long as the organization at least appears to be making progress with the offense. This defense is stout and not loosing us games. If we appear to have a good offense next year meaning a new head coach, possibly a new offensive coordinator, and a new QB, I think Peppers will stay. He is much to valuable to let go for anything less then a first. Teams have to continuously double and triple team him freeing up other guys to make plays. We need that on this defense. So I expect another deadlocked offseason. Were not going to let him walk without compensation so it comes down to how willing he is to stay in Carolina.

Okay I think a lot of you guys are confused. Nobody is going to trade for Peppers. Why would you? He's not worth even 10% of the money he get paid. Everybody knows this.

Nobody is going to trade for a tagged player (going by the assumption that we tag him again to trade him) that would have all the negotiating power in the world to get a huge deal for a guy that is basically average on a GOOD day.

Julius Peppers is terrible. No amount of one-play wonder performances when nothing matters is going to change that. Nobody is going to pay him millions of dollars again. Only the Panthers were stupid enough to do that, and everyone in the NFL has seen the result of it.

Julius Peppers will hit free agency and receive a modest deal from a team willing to take a low risk/high reward kind of chance on him. Either that or he somehow agrees to sign here long term, and I will hate the poo out of our team for a very long time because of it.

We already have plenty of useless players tied up in ridiculous contracts. Why the hell would anyone want another one?
