More Fox speculation from nfl.com...Browns possible

Cower might stay with Meeks.

Plus, since we are speculating and all, if Fox goes to Cleveland then the assumption is he will be traded there for draft picks. So what draft pick(s) is Fox worth?

Good question because you cant do what Oakland did with Gruden. Dont know exactly what we could get in return.

If we go out and get a big name like Cowher, they'll want to bring over their own people anyway. I think that's a wash.

But if Cowhers bring over a 3-4 guy for example it is a rebuilding not a retooling. Plus what if he decides we don't need 2 running backs and wants to dismantle what we have. You still think it is a wash.

Assuming that we would even get Cowher or that he is available when this comes around. I heard that Cowher is interviewing today in Buffalo.

Actually for my money I might lean toward Gruden. I have thought about this alot and have read that he has taken this year to go around and find everything he could about the spread offense to implement it in the NFL when he returns to coaching. I just think there are several components of the spread offense that could be effectively implemented in an NFL offense. And frankly he would love Meeks given he is a Tampa 2 guy. He also did a very good job of gameplanning against us. Honestly his biggest issue has always been that Tampa wouldn't spend the money to bring in talent.

I really think we need an offensive guy. My only gripe with Gruden is that he isn't very quarterback friendly. Hopefully he has learned some things after getting fired from Tampa.

They are under contract so the only way they could leave is if the Browns compensates us for them.

I haven't seen their contracts. The only thing said is that they would all be retained for at least 2010. Doesn't sound like they have long term deals. Plus as you said in another post, the whole coach for draft picks was struck down after Gruden. I doubt we could get anything but a buyout of the contract for Fox at this point.

They dont all their contracts end in 2010 but if we just wanted to bring in a head coach the assistants couldnt get out of their contracts.

About Gruden I want him here but after the statement he made on MNF about coaching his kid this year I really dont expect him to comeback in 2010. Maybe 2011. Whatever is going to happen needs to happen quickly as other teams are starting to grab up talent.

Also if Mangini does stay in Cleveland I dont see Fox going anywhere. That was the only place I was seeing Fox really going to that might have HC openings.

I don't see him going anywhere. He's a really good coach. If history is any proof we are due for a very good year. We do well one year then we have injuries the next. Seems to be a natural phenomenon.

The whole uncapped year uncertainty is what is keeping Fox from getting his well deserved extension from the Panthers.

We have the inner workings of a Super Bowl team, why change anything now. Lets get a ring first and then let the natural dismantling begin.

Yeah, because the Panthers were so damn awesome when Fox got here

There is quite a difference between what you will do in order to get your first head coaching job and once you've got some experience and decent results.

Like it or not, agree or not, Fox does have a good reputation in general around the NFL and could do better than Cleveland.

Well, at this point I would say every team looking for a coach knows the situation between him and the Panthers organization...so lets just see how good his reputation really is when it comes down to brass tax instead of talking head hyping him up!

I hope you are right though, I hope someone comes in and offers him a opportunity he cant refuse and takes Jake with him...those two have held down this team long enough

I've been on the fence all season about wanting to go in a different direction. I've settled down quite a bit on it and am ok with him staying. We could do so much worse.

Fox is in a wonderful position really, if he can keep his ego/hurt feelings in check. He stands to make quite a bit next year and if he can put together a good season he has all the cards to negotiate for either an extension or with a new team.

You have to face the reality that he's almost certain to be back and so is Delhomme.

I know, yet another year of playing a soft schedule and everyone jumping on his band wagon just so we can go 7-9 or 8-8 the year after...we are in a viscous cycle here! IMO if we don't try something different we are going to be stuck in this viscous cycle!

You're right, we can do worse but on the flip side we can also do so much better!

You can't get any draft picks for Fox. The NFl doesn't allow it.

Fox wouldn't bring Jake along with him. That would require a trade which no team is going to pick up his salary.

I realize perhaps some of these comments are tongue in cheek but I fear some people actually believe them.

When we get down to brass tacks (not tax), Fox may or may not be here but it is likely he remains unless he gets a blockbuster deal. In any event Jake will likely be here for 2010 even if Fox is not. At least until preseason and final roster cuts.

    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
    • Best part is if we draft him, we can also use him as our fourth and one QB sneaker
