Fiametta needs time to develop. So if Hoooooover does retire, the best option for the "O" is to get top reciever through the draft or free agency and begin to develop more packages for the spread offense. NFL coordinators are getting away from the use of full- time FB's anyway. The FB is now turning into a hybrid TE/wing back... ex: Crhis Cooley. Our O line is great (back ups and all), and with two of the best RB in the league in "Double Trouble" they should still be able to find room to run. Mike Goodson IS NOT a dive/iso back. He needs to be used like the Saints use Bush. Give him swing and flat routes, so he can make cuts in space. He has very good hands and could be used kinda like the Patriots use Kevin Faulk as a slot reciever. We def. found a gem in Sutton who can play anywhere we need him to behind the QB to be a solid back up option if all else fails

Schemes may change, certain positions might gain more favor, but that doesn't mean that every team will benefit by changing. The FB position is still legitimate. Even if it does fall out of favor, it will show up in years to come anyway.

I'm not convinced by the "spread" offense, tbh.

What part of ROOKIE don't you understand? He personally has the endorsement of Hoover, I've heard it with my own ears.

Hoover has nothing to gain by saying this guy has what it takes, except to just look like a team player/good ole' guy appearance.

The rookie didn't give the opposing teams we played this year over 100 points like Jake did. So sit back, take a deep breath, relax, and give the kid a chance.

He is a year deep into the system, and Hoover isn't getting any younger, and he knows it as well. Hoover likes the guy, and that's good enough for me.

Awesome. He still played like complete ass.

Nowhere in my post did I say to ditch the FB all together... I said IF Hoover retires and Fiametta isnt ready, we need to add new packages to our offense to compensate. One of our downfalls this year was that the WORLD knows Fake Delhomme sucks, and if they but 8 or 9 in the box it usually resulted in a stuffed run, sack, or Delhommes specialty- turnovers. The spread offense neutralizes this to some degree. If you line them up in the box the slant and skinny post is open ALL DAY. The spread also calls for more DB's to be on the field, leaving 1 maybe 2 LB's. The best duo in history will have no problem still carving up big yards on the ground with 3 downlinemen to dodge and 180lb corners to run over... Tell me Im wrong

Nah man, I wasn't really replying exactly to your post, but more to the notion that FB might be phased out some. I just don't like all the trends in the NFL. Every scheme has it's downsides and thus there is not necessarily a "better" one. It all depends on the players a team has (and coaches) and how it executes overall.

But just for fun, I'll tell you: you're wrong. :P

I dont know what flag football games you are watching, but the spread works. Please stop playing Madden and come back to reality. Leave it guys like you and the forward pass would still be illegal. In spite of you're ignorance of how an offense can create a mismatch, you were right about one thing. Every scheme has its downside. Therefore opening up the playbook to some new formations would help to keep the opposing D guessing. Its seems a little trite to run out of some variation of an I back set over 65% of the game...

The precursor of the spread offense was used in the early 90s in the NFL called the run and shoot by Atlanta and June Jones.

It will be adapted and used by NFL teams. I understand that Gruden is trying to find out all he can about the various spread formations and bring them to the NFL. Elements are already being used by teams like Arizona when they go to 4 receiver sets although the true run and shoot used 2 wideouts and 2 slot receivers who were usuallly running backs.

There are advantages and disadvantages to the spread much like there were to the run and shoot. It isn't new though, just like most things, they keep getting adapted and improved upon and recycled much like the wildcat is now.

Fiametta will pan out, after all his offseason will consist of getting stronger and hitting moving targets so he's gonna watch Shawne Merriman and Tila Tequilla on there weekend

Goodson needs to be converted to H-Back/returner a la rock cartwright, Sutton was a nice pickup and will take the 3rd down spot

Thank you panthers55 for doing some research b4 making an ignorant statement. The driving force to the spread is SPEED. Thats why I encourage the panthers to find another Smitty in the offseason who can outrun most corners and catch the ball. Right now, we dont have any WR's other than Stevie Franchise that will make the spread work for us. Moose is on the downside of his career, yet still an effective blocker. Jarrett is a borderline bust, and honestly I cant even tell you the name of any other panther wideouts. We may have found a decent QB in Moore, but he has to have another target in order to be effective.
