Beason: The numbers don't lie

Other notes from the interview:

Defense picking up intensity

It starts with the offense. The offense picked it up. They were moving the ball and scoring points and made it easier on us. I feel like we played pretty consistent all year. We had some games where we made a couple of mental mistakes that costed us some big plays, maybe field position and points, and with the exception of the Philly game we were in every game. It's a tough pill to swallow knowing that when you go back and watch the film its more a case of what you didn't do vs. what the offense is doing.

mood of the team after the season

It's such a now business, I can't remember what it felt like when we lost to New England because we are on such a high now and you kind of ride that wave. Hopefully going forward the mood is still the same ... kind of that reserved, cocky, confident attitude that you need to win it all in this league.

Difference between Meeks and Trgovac

Originally there was a big difference between, we played a lot of close coverage last year where we let more man coverage with a zone change up, where with Meeks its more of a lead with the zone and the man coverage is more of a curve ball. More blitz packages, more different schemes than Trgo; Coach Meeks just wants us to be fundamentally sound -- my players are better than yours -- and we're going to win the long-haul. Bend don't break kind of mentality.

As the season went on, it was funny to see how he kind of evolved and he kind of said, "you know what, I've seen these guys play man coverage, I've seen these guys blitz a little more " and he did that. He was doing a great job of calling the game. I can remember some of the times toward the latter part of the season, coming off the field thinking "man, that was a great call on third down", or after the game I'd give him a big hug and tell him he called a great game. We just started to gel. I understood what it was he wanted from the defense and from me and that was that he wanted everybody just to play football.

Jake Or Moore?

I just work there. I think they both posses intangibles that make them who they are. Being a guy who plays with a lot of passion and fire, I like that about Jake. I kind of like that he's an emotional guy. He's a proven veteran; he's been there before and he makes smart decisions. He's fearless, to be honest. He's fearless.

Matt Moore is a guy I think who you can commend, because he didn't get drafted, he was pretty much a camp arm, and for him to go into Dallas and then to get some life here, it's funny how the cards unfolded with guys getting hurt. He steps in ... nobody knows anything about him ... and he's playing well in 2007. Any time a guy can overcome obstacles like that there's something to be said about him. He hasn't reached his potential yet. How good can he be, and how fast?

Beason said he hopes to be a Panther his entire career, he's building a house in Waxhaw and likes the area now that there is more stuff to do.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
