Why I believe Jake will retire this offseason.

So there is one really big reason why Jake would not retire this offseason and that is money, right? Well, yes but not as much as you may think.

Delhomme signed his extention last offseason but most of his guarunteed money was most probably paid in 2009. Don't forget that he was already set to make about 14 million in 09 and the extention only saved about 2 million in cap space. So if Delhomme got 20 million guarunteed and 12 million was already paid that would only leave 8 million over the next 4 years.

And while Delhomme is also someone who is very competative that also means that he probably will not want to go through the embarassment of not being the starter. Let's face facts here, everyone including Delhomme can see how bad he was playing.

But probably the biggest reason why he will retire is the Panthers. This organization can be loyal to a fault but that doesn't mean they haven't known when to say goodbye either. Rucker is probably the best example of this. Rucker wanted to play and was ready to sign a new contract but the Panthers said thanks but no thanks. Rucker ended up retiring and now works for the Panthers.

Nick Goings is another one of those guys that Fox absolutely loved but when he was no longer being effective in any phase of the game, the Panthers cut him loose.

While I don't entirely agree with the concept that Fox is too loyal to vetern players, I can't entirely disput it either. But one thing Fox and Hurney has demostrated over the years is that they aren't unwilling to cut a player loose once they relized they held onto them too long.

Delhomme's retirement won't come anytime soon but I think once the playoffs and super bowl is over we will see Delhomme make an announcement before the start of FA. And I'm sure that even if it isn't completely Jake's decission, the Panthers will allow to look that way.

I can tell you why he won't. Brett Favre & Warner tearing poo up in their late 30's(is Warner 38 or 39?) / 40s. He'll keep trying until he's physically incapable of throwing a football, that's just the way Jake is.

Maybe a year of bench warming will do good for him.

Jake's not ready to call it quits.

This isn't fantasy land. We, the fans, don't get to write the story. Money, politics, and strategy do. Jake will be the starter (until he screws up just once) come game one, unless he loses his starting job to Moore in camp. Remember, though we all know Moore is better and that Jake's finger was more than likely not all that damaged, Moore got the job due to an injury to Jake...that was the story we were fed and that's the story they must work off because they created it. And by they, I mean the organization. They made their bed, now they must lay in it. We'd like to think it's as simple as "Moore starts, hands down", but it sadly is not that simple. Jake is not a quitter and will not let a horrible season defeat him. He wants to compete.

Jake's guaranteed money is split with his salary. All of it has not been paid, no where near it. Smartest thing for the Panthers to do is either restructure his contract and significantly lower the guaranteed money or if he refuses, cut him and take the loss. It will be cheaper to cut him and deal with the cap hit for a year than to pay him more money to ride the bench or come in and throw interceptions.

On a side note if Jake does start next year I will refuse watch or go to a game until he is benched.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
