Reports: Gaines Adams dead at 26

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 17, 2010 11:24 AM ET

We have some sobering news to pass along before this Sunday of football begins.

Bears defensive end Gaines Adams has died at the age of 26, according to the Greenville News in South Carolina. NBC4 in Greenville confirms the report.

Greenwood County Coroner James T. Coursey said Adams was declared dead after he was taken to an emergency room Sunday morning. Coursey said Adams appeared to be in perfect health.

Adams played his college football at Clemson. He was drafted fourth overall by the Bucs in 2007, then traded to the Bears last year.

Coursey said Adams appeared to be in perfect health and there will be an an investigation by the Greenwood Sheriff's Office and the Greenwood County Coroner's Office. An autopsy will be performed Sunday; the cause of death is unclear.

We send our best wishes and condolences to Adams' family.

Per PFT, also confirmed in tweets by Schefter:

    • I agree but he honestly has gotten better about this. Used to be he’d do it like 4-5 times a game, now it’s like 2-3. Overall I’m incredibly happy with his game, his D has been solid and when he is playing his role he’s a solid scorer and one of the few guys who can consistently finish at the rim and provide that threat. Plus he’s electric and LaMelo loves him. Going into the season I was sure he would just be a stop gap here but now I’m reconsidering and could see him continue to be a “core” piece here. Obviously not on the level of the other starters but he is an important cog for this team. We felt his missed presence during his and Moose’s suspensions.
    • Philly will be a bigger challenge than the Knicks were IMO. George and Embiid are back, not sure about Maxey but Embiid alone is a nightmare matchup for us and Moose. We’ve never really done well against him. Celtics added Tatum but honestly not sure they’re all that much better with him right now than they were when we whooped them a few weeks ago. We should be able to at the very least split these 2, hopefully take both.
