Rex Ryan was provoked before flipping the bird

Appearing on WFAN radio Thursday, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer provided an account of the events that led up to Jets coach Rex Ryan flipping his middle finger at a camera during a mixed martial arts event last week.

The gesture cost Ryan $50,000.

Glazer reports that Ryan was spit on three times by a drunken Dolphins fan, who also made light of Ryan's weight and wished death upon the first-year head coach.

"I've never seen a fan go so far over the line," Glazer said, adding that Ryan showed "great restraint" considering the circumstances. "He said to Rex, 'I hope you die You fat piece of crap.' He spit at him."

Glazer said he has spoken to the NFL on Ryan's behalf, though we'd venture to guess Commissioner Roger Goodell won't repeal the fine.

Of course he was provoked. Do most people go around flipping off others unprovoked. The issue is that being a public figure on camera, did he figure that if he acted that way there wouldn't be repercussions? I figure he did what he wanted to do and paid the price. No biggy.

Was Ryan expecting a warm reception in Miami? LOL

Doesn't excuse someone spitting on him, I think he showed allot of restraint in just flipping the guy the bird... you spit on me and I'd make you swallow your teeth.

Hard to say what Ryan would do. As big and fat as he is, He might be all talk and no action unless he sat on you.:D

Little off topic but Rex Ryan was at the Carolina Hurricanes game tonight wearing a Flyers jersey. Someone in the staff must have recognized it was him because at an intermission the storm squad girls brought him a Carolina jersey which he put on and everyone in the crowd cheered, no middle fingers tonight.

    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
    • Uh oh, Nicole Tepper hugged him. In all seriousness though every time I see more about him my hopes get higher. Smart, great attitude, prototype size and measurables, and athletic. He could be a great one.
