It was April 2019. The Canes were in the playoffs again and my wife and I had spent the morning at the fairgrounds for the annual GoodGuys car show. After we were done walking, we decided to head over to the Carolina Ale House for the Canes @ Islanders Game 2 watch party.

We got a couple beers, order some food and watched the game. At some point, a young lady approached my wife and asked her if I served in the Navy (I had a Navy hat on). She said, "yes, he retired in 1993 after serving 20 years." Mind you, I met and married my wife after I retired.  Anyway, this person got our home phone and information and the next thing you know, we have seats for Game 4 at PNC and I get introduced as (they called it back then) Fearless Hero of the game. It was pretty special. I was just a guy watching the game and they went out of their way to take care of us. Not to mention the Canes swept that series, it was a resounding win, which made it more special.

We had just sold our PSL to the Panthers a couple years before, I love hockey and my wife got hooked after 1 game in PNC. We weren't attached to anything sports at that time and we were getting single game tickets every now and then. Not just because of this thing they did for us, but seeing the team built the way it is and knowing they'll be a perennial contender makes it much easier to get those season tickets every year.

Awesome story!

    • Jake in his prime was a gutsy QB. But just like with even someone like Cam. Father time is undefeated. It's very unfortunate we have a guy who is only 24 years old that has an equivalent arm to that. Absolutely blows my mind that our brain trust lacked the basic common sense to value arm talent when making a massive trade with ramifications for years to come. Unforgivable incompetence.
    • Jake, to me, will always hold a special place in my heart.  I really feel like for his era, he deserved way more love than he got, and should’ve had more than his one Pro Bowl.  He was a gamer with an underrated rocket arm. but let me tell you, after his Tommy John surgery, when he came back, I can’t remember who it was against, but it think it was a division game, he threw a ball that was supposed to be a throw away, as I think he was under pressure, and that poo floated forever and died right at the boundary where a defender ran over and picked it off.  One of the worst throws I ever saw.  His arm just wasn’t the same after the injury and surgery.  All that to say, that’s what almost every Bryce throw to the sidelines looks like to me.
    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
