I think this could be taken a couple different ways. To remind everyone else they bear responsibility too.. maybe they just aren’t cleaning it out until they know he’s cleared waivers. He was not at the morning skate today at all.

The thought has crossed my mind that we lean heavy on Pyotr through the holiday break. Get Raanta some AHL time to build his confidence back up and if he improves bring him back up for round 2. If he’s not than reassess the situation.

Eh....given the wear and tear of playing a full schedule and perhaps playoffs, I would definitely pass on any AHL time.

He needs to be learning in net at the highest level at this point.

First off, you don't fire someone then give them an effective date. His locker is full because he hasn't cleared waivers. Or, maybe Rants is going to announce his retirement when he clears waivers with no suitors.

Second, there are trade talks happening with a host of teams. Perets is not ready for NHL hockey.

Raanta was always going to be reassigned if he cleared. The Canes get no cap relief unless he is claimed or reassigned. If he cleared and was not reassigned then the Canes would still be on the hook for his full hit, that’s why it’s called burying a contract in the AHL.

Additionally, to my knowledge, Raanta was not placed on unconditional waivers which is what is required in order to terminate a contract. And unless there is a contract breach, the termination of a contract has to be agreed upon by both parties. Raanta would only agree to that if he was intent on returning to Finland.

Now, instead of Raanta’s cap hit being $1.5M, it’s only $350,000 and it’s referred to as a buried penalty.

Also, in regards to a trade, there is a trade freeze coming up from December 20th to December 28th.

Hopefully Raanta can get back to the form he had for us last year in the AHL. Doubt he’ll ever be a Cane again but maybe another team i’d he claws his way back. He had a good season with us last year. Although age may be a factor.

Regardless of the current state of goalies in Raleigh, the fact this team decided to keep both Anderson and Raanta after last season raised my level of concern.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I was fairly certain with both of their injury concerns that at least 1 of them would be gone.

Am I surprised this is where we are right now? Hardly.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
