Sam Wyche compares Tebow to Montana and Esiason

hold on, its not what you think:

Former NFL coach Sam Wyche is one of the people who's been tasked with teaching The Golden Calf of Bristol how to transform himself from a spread-option quarterback at Florida to a pro-style passer in the NFL. And Wyche says that while The Golden Calf of Bristol has work to do, he's got a similar mental makeup to two of the quarterbacks Wyche coached in the NFL, Joe Montana and Boomer Esiason.

"He's as smart as anyone," Wyche said of The Golden Calf of Bristol, per the St. Petersburg Times. "I was around Montana and Boomer, and they would be at the top of the list of understand theory coming out of college. They understood concepts. This guy is right with them. I hope he gets a good coordinator and a good quarterback coach. If not, he'll be smarter than they are."

Wyche was the 49ers' quarterbacks coach for Montana's first four seasons and the Bengals' head coach for Esiason's first eight seasons. He says that if he were still in coaching, he'd love the chance to do with The Golden Calf of Bristol what he did with Montana and Esiason.

"Would I draft him?" Wyche said. "Absolutely. Sure. If he's not taken early, somebody is going to be called a genius for taking him wherever he goes."

Wyche acknowledged that The Golden Calf of Bristol left Florida without the passing mechanics that NFL teams want to see, but he pointed to Randall Cunningham as an example of a quarterback who overcame similar problems in the NFL. According to Wyche, it's possible to overcome the things The Golden Calf of Bristol does wrong because, "So many things are right about this guy."

-good to know hes knowledgeable on the game. But can he play it at a high level? that is the question.

yea.. compare a guy who has never taken a snap at a professional level, who played in a non pro offense throughout his entire career, has such a bad throwing motion/style that he won't be passing at the combine to THE greatest quarterback of all time..

in other news: Sam Wyche exposed as a moron.

Jeez

I dunno who's stupider. Wyche or Esiason.

This is what frustrates me as a member of this board. People look at the titles and then make irrational and aggressive comments about the quoted person.

First off he never actually compared The Golden Calf of Bristol to Montana or Boomer, he said he is right there with them for understanding theory and concepts. That translates to, he is a smart guy who can digest information and can develop good practice in the film room. In other words he will not fail due to lack of trying.

Secondly he fully acknowledged that his mechanics needed a ton of work, hence why he was working with him. Before you say anything, no he again did not compare him to Cunningham. He used Cunningham as an example of someone with dodgy mechanics who succeeded, as if to say it can happen, here is a guy who achieved it. He did NOT compare them in ability or talent.

Finally. Yes he did say he would draft him. He also said he did not know where he would be drafted and that someone could get a steal later in the draft. He has already conceded that he will fall in the draft. He knows that there are too many question marks about him. So stop thinking Wyche thinks he is going to go early purely based on how smart he is or how good his work ethic is.

This board is full of people who take extreme angles on everything. Maybe, just maybe people should actually try and diagnose what is truely being said before you jump in with your clever and smart ass remarks.

Well aware of that, however what is quoted in the article is not the same thing. The ONLY thing he uses as a comparison is The Golden Calf of Bristol's ability to absorb concepts and theories. As in how to attack certain defenses, how to diagnose in the film room blah blah blah. Nothing to do with ability, nothing to do with how well he will play at the next level and nothing to do with how he will be as great as the other QBs he mentions.

The title is by the writer. It is common knowledge that titles are grab lines designed to draw attention. However, what Wyche said, was comparing in the loosest sense of the word. He essentially said The Golden Calf of Bristol is smart but has dodgy technique.

What happens is that people assume that what is written is what is said by the quoted person. So everyone jumped into the thread calling Wyche a moron, when in actuality the writer has used quotes and a title to paint a different picture to what was actually said.

Some people need to just slow down with their judgements.

that is precisely the reason why I posted the disclaimer before the article. Been on this block for a minute, and I know how some ppl think. But i don't think about anymore. ;)

good points. agreed. too much just reading of the thread title and not enough reading what was actually said.

about wyche's comments...pretty interesting. hadn't heard anything about that. i think right now is the first chance that people are going to get to see what this kid actually knows. everyone knows that the way he played in college won't work well in the pros. the discussion has largely revolved around can he learn to play at a pro level? if the intelligence and work ethic is there, i have little reason to believe that he won't be able to make that adjustment.

at any rate...he won't be a starter out of the gate. if he goes in the first round that is going to be expected unless he goes to a team with an already solid QB presence in place (like aaron rodgers going to green bay and phillip rivers going to san diego). 2nd or 3rd round he's most likely going to be a relatively low risk/high reward type acquisition.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
