SAN DIEGO -- First LaDainian Tomlinson, and now Darren Sproles.

The San Diego Chargers have decided not to tender a contract to Sproles, allowing the speedy running back to test the free agent market, a person with knowledge of the situation said Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't made an official announcement.

The move came four days after the team released Tomlinson, who ranks eighth on the all-time rushing list with 12,490 yards.

If the Chargers wanted to keep Sproles, they'd have to make him an offer of about US$7.3 million.

The Chargers have always valued Sproles as a multiple threat. While they can still talk with Sproles about a long-term deal, other teams might want to give him a shot as a featured back.

Sproles has said he believes he can be an every-down back. The Chargers have used him as a backup running back, return man and as a receiver out of the backfield.

He made about $6.6 million last season after being tagged as a franchise player. Tomlinson made about $6 million. Still, the Chargers' running game ranked second-to-last in the league.

Sproles was second to Tomlinson last year with 343 yards and three touchdowns on 93 carries, an average of 3.7 yards per carry. He was fourth with 45 catches for 497 yards and four TDs. He was also the primary kickoff and punt returner and scored on a punt return.

Two seasons ago, Sproles had 328 all-purpose yards in a wild-card playoff game against Indianapolis, including the winning 22-yard touchdown run in overtime.

The next week, though, with Tomlinson sidelined by a groin injury, Pittsburgh held him to 15 yards on 11 carries. He did have a 63-yard kickoff return and a 62-yard TD catch in the game's final two minutes after Pittsburgh had opened a 35-17 lead.

Tomlinson, 30, believes he can play three or four more seasons.

I would not mind having sproles back up double trouble and make us a 3 headed monster. But id rather see him come in on STs more than anything. I know there is no way we are going to pursue him this year. But it would be nice to have a good return man on the roster.

Exactly. Why would we be excited about this? He's not coming here. We have two backs that are better in almost every way.

The only back in the league who is better at taking passes out of the backfield is Reggie Bush, and possibly Ray Rice. Sproles is ridiculously dangerous in the open field, he would add a lot to our passing game. Could maybe try lining him up in the slot as a WR since he has good hands.

Sproles WOULD NOT cost a lot of money. They couldn't achieve a contract so they had to tag him(plus they needed an insurance policy for LT). He could probably be had at a reasonable 3mil a year +/-.

I would love to have Sproles, even if it was just to come in on passing downs and to return kicks/punts(uh hello, everyone here is always complaining that we need a more explosive kick returner, Sproles is one of the best.)

1. Sproles would cost more money than the FO is willing to spend.

2. As I said before, we have a loaded backfield. The last thing we need is another RB.

3. This goes along with number two. We need WR's who can catch the ball and make plays. Not a KR/PR specialist who can play RB, even if he is great at catching.

Sproles is a game changer. He had over 300 plus all purpose yards against the Colts in the playoffs a couple years ago. Excellent out of the backfield and would instantly legitamize our return game. In the unlikely event we trade away one of our stud backs, or even if we don't this guy would be a free agent prize the likes we have not scored in years. Cya Goodson, cya Sutton, bring this guy in.

You act like Sproles is some dumb servant who will do whatever anyone wants him to. Look at Ward last year. Sure he failed, but he left NY to be "the man". Sproles wants to be a starter, not some ST hotshot like he's been for ages. Michael Turner can tell you what it's like to become "the man". So you can dream all you want about us getting Sproles as a special, CHEAP, weapon because that ain't going to happen.

Sproles to not come here.

If he is like any other player, he wants his chance at a starting position. His best chance may be with the Chargers.

I like Sproles, but I wouldn't pay an aging, undersized scat back any large amount of money. As soon as Sproles loses his speed, he won't produce.

    • Such a dumb pick and most of us knew it Ladd would’ve been the perfect match with Bryce But instead they draft XL to fill the void at the X spot because we had a 34 year old Adam Thielen. Then a year later we draft a real X WR and move XL inside where he has absolutely no business being for a list of reasons
    • My logic was hopefully a new HC would have a LOT quicker hook for Bryce. But, that is assuming they would even be allowed. I guess that's a call to the owner's box for permission.
    • I’m not overly defending the pick. I was team Stroud by a country mile but I also knew what to expect as far as ceiling goes with Bryce  I had concerns with Bryce’s arm strength and size. Neither seem to overly be an issue. He’s proven to throw with enough anticipation that he makes up for a lack of velocity. I was worried about the way he played in college not translating to the league. Spending 8 seconds behind LOS. I did also think it would take Young a few years for him to reach his full potential. I also think he’s too smart and accurate to flat out bust which all of seems to be pretty accurate Bryce is someone you can absolutely win with. No one thought he’d be the type to carry a well below average supporting cast to a Super Bowl. He’s fully capable of giving you those 4-5 special plays a game that help your team win. And then you have those rare times where he’s the reason you win like in Atlanta.  All good teams have more than just a QB.  Even the teams that are winning this year all have a lot more than what we have. Supporting cast/defense… more than what we have  As far as Morgan goes I 100% agree. Fwiw he was legit team Bryce during the draft process. I know that for a fact. Last years draft is a complete write off. This past draft still up for debate. TMac and Scourton look solid. I can’t remember the last time I saw Princely win a rep and I’m being honest. Ransom has a little value. I think ETN is a nice insurance add. Evans could be a TE2.    I think this offseason Morgan will get aggressive with trying to land a pass rusher. Whether that’s a trade for Crosby, signing Hendrickson, it’s going to be top priority. We need a ILB. I really like Kaden Ellis. Sonny Styles should be in our draft range. We also need a tight end and it would be interesting to see this offseason with Kenyon Sadiq
