I think Dwill sealed Jake's fate :). Fox/Hurney thought maybe going into the year the team might have been divided into the for Jake/against Jake camps. They decided to nip it in the bud early so that there is no controversy. It's Moore's job to loose. Hopefully he becomes our Tom Brady and this become a moot point next year.

with the sentimental attachment that many on the team had for jake, it was going to be nearly impossible for moore to take the team over in the offseason. best thing for moore and the team was to eliminate jake altogether.

you want to move forward? cut ties with the past.

Yessir. Good post.

Not sure where Scott is coming from, cutting Jake makes perfect sense in this uncapped year. Teams need to operate under the assumption that the cap will return, so this might be the only window of opportunity the Panthers had to do this without long-term cap implications.
:werd:

The cap coming back isn't a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

another reason for this is to take temptation away from fox to put jake back in. It's pretty evident, esp from the press conference, that fox is pretty emotionally tied (shocker, i know) to jake. If things got rough for moore then fox would be tempted to put jake back in and he would do it a whole lot quicker than he ever did with replacing jake.

Very well could have been the same deal with deshaun foster. Higher ups tell fox it's time to move on and then eliminate the temptation by cutting foster loose.

It was the right move. If jake gets picked up by another team (which its looking like he might) then we aren't on the hook for the money either.

The first line of his article "Wow. Talk about a blindside hit on the quarterback"... sums up the rest of his position on this... he's clueless.

I heard 12-year-olds accurately predict 17's release before the season ended. If a Delhomme cut was a "blindside" to Fowler, he's got no business writing sports articles on Panther's football. What a tool.

Bu they did do Jake a favor by cutting him now. Cutting him after TC and he would have a hard time finding a team. Cutting him know gives Jake the best chance of getting on a team and getting a good contract.

I agree. As I said in another thread, they either did it to give Jake the best chance to catch on with someone else or after seeing that some guys like Williams were still in jake's corner they wanted to end the controversy and cut ties with Jake to establish Moore as the starter and stop any locker room issues that could arise.

How do you cut other older players that actually are playing decent football and justify leaving Jake on the team? They appear to be cutting the fat and he certainly qualifies.

It is certainly consistent with the whole rebuilding theme. I only worry that when you shred the veteran leadership on a team you make your locker room weaker and more susceptible to negative influences and increase the chances when things get tough, the team will cave. Most teams in rebuilding mode like St Louis for example cave each year when things get tough. Our team last year fought hard all year even when we were 4-7. Veteran leaders are often the reason. Sure we aren't cutting all the leaders but we sure are cutting a bunch.

We might be on the hook for the whole amount since it is guaranteed. Otherwise we will at least be on the hook for the difference between what is guaranteed and what the other team picks up. it is very unlikely we will be off the hook totally from what I read.

They only cut him as a favor. It can only hurt us. We could have accomplished the same thing cutting him in June.

We didn't trade him, we cut him. If he doesn't sign with another team, we pay him 12 million. If he does sign with another team, we pay him 12 million. And if another CBA is reached before the season starts, he could actually count against our salary cap.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
