One thing you can't argue, Hurney and the Panthers are a class organization...

Panthers coach John Fox got to break the news face-to-face to Jake Delhomme Thursday afternoon, a conversation Delhomme admitted was “emotional.”

General manager Marty Hurney probably avoided it to keep from bawling himself, but had someplace else he had to be.

Agent Rick Smith, who’s represented Delhomme throughout his career, was working in his Chicago office building Thursday morning, preparing for the free agent period himself, and certainly not expecting the next call.

“It’s 11 yesterday morning, my time,” Smith said. “I look down at my cell, and it’s Marty’s cell. We talk all the time. So I answer, ‘Hey, Marty, what’s up.’”

“I’m in your lobby,” Hurney replied. “Come downstairs and get me.”

Smith said he was initially confused, and quickly found a conference room where they could sit and Hurney could deliver the news no one wanted to be on either end of.

“He said he just couldn’t do it over the phone,” Smith said. “So what does he do? He flies to Chicago so he can tell me to my face. To me, that tells you about the bond between the player and the team, and the character of the organization.

“Who else does that?”

while i don't think being a classy organization gives you a better chance to win, part of what makes classy actions 'classy' is doing them regardless of whether it will benefit you or your interests in the short or long term.

It explains why NE didn't get Beason...

And he wouldn't be happy going there too. Didn't one time he mention he doesn't want to play for them & glad he came here instead? I think that speak for our organzation as classy when you hear many want to play here.

    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
