2001:

Carolina Starting Over

NFC West Preview

Dateline: August 16, 2001

Head coach George Seifert is taking his Carolina Panthers on a youth movement this season, and he started the process by releasing veteran quarterback Steve Beuerlein during the off-season. Along with Beuerlein went eight other veterans 30 years and older, including cornerback Eric Davis and fullback William Floyd.

2010:

What we saw on Friday was the beginning of a young movement, a purging of 30-something-year-old players with an eye toward the future. The team parted ways with quarterback Jake Delhomme, defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu and linebackers Na’il Diggs and Landon Johnson and figure to replace them with younger players.

Good news...The first time the team did this they went to the Superbowl in 3 years.

Bad News...They finished 1 and 15 the next year.

I don't understand this rebuilding year stuff. Our starting secondary and linebacking corps is the same. Our offensive line, tight ends, running backs and at least 3 of our wide receivers will be the same. The only significant rebuilding spot is defensive line, and even there, we are bringing back Tyler, Brown, Johnson, and Leonard, guys with some potential. And free agency isn't done.

What scares me is right now Hilee Taylor is our 3rd DE..................................... I don't mind Hilee getting a shot, but ehhh can we get 2 more DE's please.....They can be picked up after the draft or in the draft or cheap vet pick up's in FA...just need more bodies there.

Oh come on dude, you don't think Peppers was a drag in the locker room? Beason didn't call him out because everything was peaches. Everyone knew he didn't want to be there. That's a killer on morale. Drop the dead weight and start guys who want to win a Super Bowl.

No.I think Peppers was respected in the locker room. you said its improvement in attitude.I dont think thats true seeing as we just cut Diggs,Lewis,Jake...All leaders of the locker room. Now if we can come out winning then new leaders outside of Beason will step up.But if we start bad then you we will see how young this team is because they will lose focus quick.

People are mistaking a "youth movement" for what is really just a salary dump. All of these old guys were on a downward slide and had expensive contracts. Some idea started floating around that we only wanted guys around 25 years old and it's just made up. We're looking at that 33 year old DE right now.

This is more like a renovation than rebuilding. We have many, many pieces in place for a playoff run.

My point on attitude was directed at Peppers. His ability was respected but, again, if he was respected as a football player, he wouldn't have been called out through the media by THE leader of the defense. He didn't want to be here. Period. Have you ever played a team sport alongside a person who didn't really want to win or even play? It's frustrating. Diggs was a role player whose age indicates a decline while playing at a position of strength for this team. Jake was a leader but he would have been a huge distraction on the bench and one of the worst starters in the league on the field. And Damione Lewis was a leader? ok. We don't lose much by cutting any of those three.

You started talking about the locker room.I said we will lose leadership in the locker room.Nothing to do with their play.I am talking about leadership in the locker room.If its one thing you have to give Peppers is that he was respected..in the lockerroom. That has nothing to do with Beason being in the wrong and calling Peppers out in the media.

    • Neither Barkley nor even a healthy CMC would move the needle much for us. Those are guys that impact teams that already have impressive overall offenses and defenses, so they can perform the complimentary roles that make them actually valuable. We should know that specifically because CMC almost never moved the needle on bad Panthers team after bad Panthers team. Ask Giants fans about that with Saquon.
    • I would generally disagree. You see a lot more load management than previously but that is because being healthy in the playoffs is such a key factor. Different philosophies in that regard than previous generations.  Baseball really doesn't matter until at least halfway through the season. I am not gonna say they don't play hard but the physical demands are infinitesimal in the MLB in comparison to basically any other major pro sport.  People dislike all the shooting these days but that's a direct correlation with how much the overall skill level of the average NBA player has drastically risen over the past 15ish years. There are other aggravating factors, certainly, but that is the biggest one in terms of playing style differences. So many of the guys from the 80's and 90's wouldn't even be able to play in the modern NBA at all. The biggest problem the NBA has with the American market(they are the only US sport that has any real international appeal or interest, minus the NHL) is that they are so steadily corrupt and fix the systems against the small market teams. Well, you eventually lose a big chunk of the league viewership/potential viewership in the process. Take the very obviously fixed NBA draft lotteries. Superstar and upper tier star players rarely want to play for small market teams, nor can they usually afford to pay them. So how do you expect them to possibly compete in that environment?
