Rhys Lloyd to Giants or Vikings?

i wouldn't be a bit surprised if kasay and baker were both replaced. i could actually see it happening soon.

baker just isn't a good punter anymore. he's too slow and pretty expensive as far as punters go.

kasay can't do the whole job. let him go and get someone who can do FGs and KOs. you want to save money, quit paying two people to do the job that one can do for less money. sentimental roster choices are being thrown out the window. kasay most likely is gone.

Baker is nowhere near solid. He may be able to boot them deep but he also tends to outkick his ST coverage. Thats a big no no. Also a big no no his way to long (about 1.5 seconds slower then average) from hand to kick time, which is why he is blocked so much. Add to that he is not a KOS I say we need a Punter.

But don't do anything foolish. Don't cut him until we have a replacement. Sign 2 or 3 UDFA and vets to 1 year deals and let them battle it out in camp. Baker is definitely upgradeable.

While I guess it's possible Kasay is let go/retires, I think it is more likely they want to bring in a young guy they are more comfortable with kicking FG's than Lloyd, and develop him to be Kasay's replacement in a year or two.

Agree. It possible we could be looking at a kicker in the Draft once we fill our need there.

Baker to handle kickoffs.

MONDAY: Lloyd visiting Vikings, Giants; Baker likely to handle kickoffs

March 8th, 2010, 10:11 am · Post a Comment · posted by sreed

Free agent kicker Rhys Lloyd is en route to Minnesota today for a visit with the Vikings. He also has a visit to the New York Giants set up for Tuesday, according to his agent Frank Murtha. Murtha said both teams are very interested in Lloyd and have and have made initial offers. The Vikings want him to be a kickoff specialist, while the Giants would give him the opportunity to compete for both spots.

Murtha said it’s unlikely Lloyd will return to Carolina next season.

“It seems they have moved on,” Murtha said. “Stranger things have happened in this league, but unless something changes it doesn’t look like he’ll be back.”

Murtha, who also represents punter Jason Baker, said the impression he gets from the Panthers is that Baker is likely to handle kickoffs this year.

On his Twitter page, Lloyd seemed to say goodbye to Panthers fans by saying, “At this time regardless of what happens I would like to take the time to thank all the Panthers faithful for (your) support.”

Good, we get the roster spot back.

Id love to bring in a kicker who at least pretends to make an effort to tackle

I don't know, I thought Lloyd always showed effort to tackle. He was just really bad at it. But he would at least run into the guy or grab hold of him. I remember numerous kickoffs last year where if Lloyd hadn't touched the returner it would have been a TD.

He sucked at it and looked very awkward but he made an effort.
