The reason I think our secondary gets beaten by short routes..

Seems to be that they don't seem to jump the routes, opting to play it safe against the deep routes and let the other team get a chance to catch the ball..

IMO our secondary better be watching film during most of their time off this week so they can understand which targets Warner pops the ball out to when he see's pressure coming..that way we can jump those routes..either allowing for interceptions, or making warner hesitant to throw them and giving more time for the pressure to get there...

The reason is that they play alot of zone and want to keep everything in front of them. That is Trgo's scheme. This gives up yards, but we have won consistently with it.

Remember guys, we played the best offenses in the league at the end of the season....and went 4-1.

IDK about anyone else, but I think this soft zone coverage them seem to play on almost every down is killing us. Like you said, Warner will carve the secondary up like a roast if they a) don't get to Warner and either sack him or at least force him to throw early, or B) play this ridiculous zone D against fitzgerald and boldin and allow them to get potentially piviotal third downs. The D needs to be on its heels this week.

Thats it to a tee. We play safe zones and when we do play man our CBs go into prevent. IMO I dont like it but it dose cover up our weakness of our Safety's. Both cant cover a lick but can deliver a good hit. Imo Godfrey will be alot better next year but Harris is just bad at it.

It worked last time. We gave up yards but end the end Warrner gave up the pick and it cost them the game.

Thats true. I'm just afraid that sooner or later it will cost us the game. Lets hope that doesn't happen this week, or the two weeks after that.

These safe zones have been given up a fair amount of points lately..they don't seem to work against good offenses...hoping we have some new wrinkles in the D or we will have to rely on the Offense to carry us to the Super Bowl(who would have thought that)

The Panthers are basically giving up the 5 yard pass in order to try and prevent bigger plays. People complain about our corners being too far away from WRs, but we don't have shutdown corners. There is an exception, if Lucas or Gamble decides that the WR they are playing is slow, then they can ask Trgo to let them play him tight, and even with no safety help. Both Lucas and Gamble have done this before, but it doesn't happen much. Gamble and Lucas also have a certain number of times in a game when they know the route the WR is going to run and they jump the route. Sometimes they knock the ball away, miss they ball, the ball is thrown away, or they get an INT. The problem this year is that our secondary has been dropping INTs. I'm almost certain that the Panther secondary will have at least 2 opportunities to make an INT in the Arizona game. If they catch the INTs I think we will win, if they don't we might be in trouble.

This is just my personal opinion, but I would rather play the attacking style of defense such as the Ravens, Eagles, and Steelers.

It really gets lame watching all that soft zone, it's true that we have been winning, but we are winning in spite of our defense.

We still play the scheme as if our front 4 are dominant, which they aren't.

You're def on point but I think what everyone wants to see is them mix it up just a lil more. Maybe loosen up a bit once in a while and bring in a coverage LB (if we have one) but not to the point where shifting is risky. Changing just enough to show diff looks to the QB would be a world of diff. The whole NFL knows who our Def is. The whole Def secondary doesn't have to cover the whole field ALL the time.

The success of teams with the short pass (which has been present for several years) drives me nuts. :mad2:

This year we've won more than we've lost, but that's not been true the majority of the time.

Sometimes I say, "what's the difference between giving up 1 25-yard pass and giving up 5 5-yard passes? They end up the same anyways, it only results in more plays for the defense, which in turn, tires them out."

Our CBs are often lined up past the 5 yard contact cushion so bumping receivers off their routes is not an option. Even the most physical corners would have trouble in this scheme, and considering both starters are at least decent at bumping receivers off routes, that's essentially what this defense is designed to do. IMO for a team that wants to be physical like we do, it's too finesse of a scheme, and it's not like they execute it well. We've given up point totals of 31, 34, 10, 23, 31, 45, and 22 points the last 7 games. It's not the defense I'd run, but that's neither here nor there.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
