Gil Brandt on panthers draft

i really don't buy into that whole "3 years" for a receiver to develop. why would it be specifically tailored to wide outs? wouldn't corner backs have just much difficulty if not more difficulty adapting to the pros? i think somebody made that up to give fans hope a few years into the future when their team drafts a bust wide out. like how the lions took something like 4 receivers in the first straight, the only talented one being calvin johnson.

not to mention... i hadn't heard of this 3 year rule until braylon edwards finally had a good year... and he's been back to playing like garbage ever since.

Though WR is one of our biggest needs, rookie WRs rarely make an impact.

Not on our team, they don't. Fox rarely even plays them.

Keary Colbert became an impact rookie out of necessity. Wish it would have lasted beyond that one year :(

It does happen on other teams sometimes, but usually only with the very top guys. Don't know that we'll get someone in that crowd this draft.

Usually I would agree that rookie WR's don't make an impact, but in the last couple of years, I've seen a lot of productive rookies around the league. I don't know if it's the spread offenses or not, but most of them seem to be learning the pro game a little faster nowadays.

i think gilyard would make an impact right away actually. look at what desean jackson and percy harvin did their rookie seasons... he's kind of the same mold of player, or maybe even brandon lafell (who reminds me of a hybrid between donald driver & reggie wayne). but i think gilyard would make a bigger impact out of the slot than lafell would on the outside. i say keep jarrett on the outside, smith as your #1, draft gilyard for the slot, and see what happens. although, i'm still rooting for charly martin.

Same body type..just not the same speed.
