I'd have to say that Emmit Smith might be dumbest person as in IQ and general cognitive ability. But as far as who is the dumbest football analyst and makes the most baseless comments and are always wrong, I'd like to throw these names out there.

Merril Hoge - I change the channel as soon as I see his face. Painfully retarded.

Cris Carter - He can be smooth/charismatic but everything that comes out of his mouth is wrong. Just flat out wrong. He is so arrogant that he thinks whatever he says is pure gold and doesn't bother researching or paying attention to anything.

Dan Patrick - Good call Acewalker. Aside from his general arrogance, what pisses me off the most about DP is how critical he is of players considering he never put the pads on. If you were never a player (at any level) you have to maintain a certain level of humility and should never criticize someone's toughness or effort. You should stick to analyzing strategy and decision-making.

It is a toss up between Deon Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Both great former players but neither very good analysts or very insightful. It proves that you can have great physical skills without being very intelligent in the process.

I think as far as analysis goes, Emmitt knew what he was talking about. He just didn't know how to say it (kinda like Frank and Buck sometimes).

No Prisco option? Or does he miss the cut to be considered a football analyst in the first place?

Oversight. He'd have been a better option than Maas :(

Wonder if a mod could add him.

Defiently Jamie Dukes.

But on a side note Warren Sapp is pretty damn smart (loud mouth and he always is way to happy but football smart). I got in the habit there at the end of the season of just betting on his upsets from the Game Day Morning show . Won every one I bet on. If I remember correctly he predicted us to beat up on the Giants because of there torn up secondary.

Sapp is good, he just always sounds like he has Sh*t caught in his throat.

I think Emmitt Smith is probably the dumbest, but the only person that makes me change the channel faster than when I hear Kendra laugh is Merrill Hodge (sp?). I cannot stand that guy. Every time I used to hear him call Adrian Peterson "The Cashier", I literally contemplated buying a plane ticket to Connecticut just so I could punch him in the face as hard as I could. Just once Baby Jesus. Please, just once.

i dont think any of them are not intelligent. some may not articulate well (emmitt) . whats funny is that must of us call them stupid or dumb on our messageboards , but they were smart enough to figure out what they were good and and use it to make tons of money and will be finished working decades before most of the "intelligent" people on this board will. most of us will be working into our 50's and 60's and they will only work past there 30's if they want to. i want to have there kind of intelligence

That's what I clarified with Emmitt in my last post. It is possible to be intelligent and not be articulate (though it can make you sound less so).

Let me give you some examples of what qualifies for me as "dumb" though.

Joe Theismann had a talent for contradicting himself, sometimes in as short a span as ten minutes. He might say "they're good against the run" and then watch them give up a big play five minutes later and turn around and say "well, they're not very good against the run"

Bradshaw? Lots of dumb statements. prime example: This past year they had each of the Fox guys predict the Super Bowl, and then pick their playoff teams. When Bradshaw put his playoff bracket together, he had the NFC team that he picked to be in the Super Bowl losing in the divisional round. He didn't notice the error until they were on the air.

FYI: For the record, I like Terry. He's very entertaining, but he's dumb as a box of rocks.

How about Jamie Dukes? There's material for sure, but probably the biggest examples stem from his worship of Michael Vick. His suggestion that Vick was the ideal QB to build a franchise around was laughable, right up there with his "won't believe till I see a cell phone photo" bit. Lord knows there's more, but that's the worst.

And then there's the guy I left off, Pete Prisco (doh). A while back, Prisco made a list of the ten best quarterbacks in the league and put Chad Pennington at number ten. Just a few days later, in response to a question from a Jets fan, Prisco stated (strongly) that Pennington wasn't a top ten quarterback. Throw in the examples of factual errors in his articles too, some of which have been corrected after comments from readers on this site.

In Prisco's case, you could make an argument that he's not dumb, just lazy. Either way, he comes off looking pretty bad as a journalist.

This is what I mean by "dumb".

Throwing in some other examples:

Capable of decent analysis, but not very articulate:

Emmitt Smith (understatement)

Jerry Glanville

Shannon Sharpe

Frank and Buck

(Frank's the better analyst, Buck's the better speaker, though not by much)

Good analysts who often just rub people the wrong way:

Cris Collinsworth

Keith Olbermann

Chris Berman

John Madden

Smart guys, good analysts, but just not cut out for commentary:

Brian Billick

Kevin Greene

Ronnie Lott

Bill Parcells (his TV gig was horrible)

i actually think tony dungy is one of the most awkward football analysts in the history of the nfl

Dungy has a rookie season under his belt now. I think he will be good given time.

For this part year, Rodney Harrison was way worse than Dungy.
