Panthers interested in Jason Campbell

Buffalo, Cleveland, or Oakland will likely draft Clausen in the first round... One of the other two will likeley draft McCoy in the second round...

That leaves us and Jacksonville in the "interested teams" category... Jacksonville has a hard-on for The Golden Calf of Bristol just because of the influx of interest it would generate... I wouldn't put it past them to reach like hell and take him in the first round... I mean, they did pretty much give up everything they owned for Derrick Harvey, of all people... and they are trying to sell tickets...

That leaves an unknown team (could be Cleveland?), us, and likely Buffalo (as I think Oakland or Cleveland will take Clausen) as the most interested...

lol why do people hate Jason Campbell so much?

I can understand the "not giving Moore a fair shot" sentiment, but other than that, what the hell?

He hasn't exactly had a great supporting cast around him during his career, and his owner is as loony as Daffy Duck...

bc its kinda going back on our word to Moore. I know its a business but dang.

Couple of other things...

I'm not convinced Shanahan is willing to part with him so easily just because he has McNabb. Maybe, but it's no lock. Shanahan likes "competition" too.

Campbell in no way fits the profile for what the team needs in a backup (that being a reliable veteran with a steady - if unspectacular - history of play).

Said it elsewhere, you don't back up one question mark with another.

As has been mentioned, the team would look pretty dumb if they took a 13 million dollar cap hit just to ensure that Matt Moore was securely "the guy" and then went out and traded a high pick to get competition.

And if you take the report seriously (having it come from a station owned by Dan Snyder is a bit of an issue) and "five teams" really are interested, what makes anyone think he can be had for less than a high pick?

The Redskins put a first round tender on him. They may not get that, but if there really are several bidders to this auction, the price isn't likely to come so cheap. How smart would it be for a team that badly needs help in other areas to give up a high pick for something they've publicly said is settled?

We would only pick up Campbell if he were released. We won't trade for him especially if there is a competition. When was the last time that we went into any kind of trade where there were 5 teams going after a player and we won out. Unless this is another situation like McNabb where Campbell might have some influence over where he will go he will be headed elsewhere.

He won't be the starter here that goes to Moore. And if we willing to waste 13 million sending Delhomme packing to establish Moore as the starter, why would we bring in Campbell to start the whole controversy again? I don't have any insider info but honestly unless we do a flip flop on our intentions for Moore, Campbell isn't coming here and those predictiing it are as right as they were when they said that Peppers would stay, McNabb would come here and all the other fan predictions.

You also said elsewhere that the Eagles wouldn't trade McNabb to the 'skins barring a "Herschel Walker" type deal...

Just saying...

FWIW, I really agree that the Panthers "interest" at this point is just speculation...

That said, I'll still argue that we should really be interested if the price is right... (no more than a 5th rounder, which we don't have unless we get it elsewhere)...

I'm not predicting it is going to happen... I am saying it is a lot closer to happening than it isn't, like a lot of you want...

fairly sure the FO wants to use what little value picks we have for higher needs on our team.. that seems to make the most sense. so until we see "jason campbell signed with Carolina"... I'ma leave all the useless speculation go to the kids who are bored around here..

The issue with Delhomme here went MUCH deeper than him being a veteran. He was well liked by the staff and team. His distractions would have much much greater than bringing in another vet.....it always is when you replace the incumbent and keep him as a back-up.

Don't make me do it (link) :D

...and comparing Campbell to Carr is laughable...

Actually, it isn't.

No one questioned Carr's athletic ability, and he had some decent stats (one of the highest completion percentages in the league, as I recall). Other than some complaints about his delivery, the physical stuff was all positive.

In both cases, it's the mind and heart that concerned people. The questions about Carr revolved around his decision making and leadership skills. It's the same issue with Campbell. That's why you're hearing all the same arguments now that you did three years ago.

Throw in that both guys were on the "big stage" last year (Sunday Night and/or Monday Night) and in their respective spotlights, Campbell looked somewhere between average and awful while Moore broke out.

    • I don't necessarily think he will be moved, I would currently be leaning against that notion. I think a lot will depend on the coaching situation. Carroll certainly can't be thinking about wanting to go through a serious strip down and overhaul, so the longer he plans to remain, the less likely I think Crosby gets moved.
    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
