Trent Dilfer: "Bradford Not Even Close to best player in Draft"

With all indications pointing to Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford being the first overall pick in the 2010 draft, not every voice is trumpeting the case for Bradford.

In a recent appearance on ESPN Radio's St. Louis affiliate, ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer gave a candid assessment of the 2008 Heisman winner: "In my opinion, he's not even close to the best player in this draft."

Wow. Trent, please elaborate.

"I think he has major, major challenges ahead of him," Dilfer said. "Sam Bradford is not Mark Sanchez. He is not Matthew Stafford. He is not Matt Ryan. I would say he's not even Joe Flacco."

Dilfer explains that, in his view, Bradford hasn't been "challenged" in the college game, and that selecting Bradford could end up being a "catastrophic" mistake for the Rams.

So who does Dilfer like? He thinks that Jimmy Clausen is the best prepared to make an immediate impact, but that Colt McCoy will be the best of the bunch four years from now. Dilfer acknowledges, however, that all three players are "projects."

Dilfer could end up being right about Bradford; if Dilfer is, he'll be able to say he's one of the only ones who saw the potential problems with Bradford being the first pick.

Suh is the best player in the draft. No one argues this. The problem is QB is so important.

agreed, but thats universally recognized. hes been against Bradford at #1 since day one. he doesn't think hes the best QB (or close to it apparently), since he brought up Clausen.

Well maybe the Rams should have went after jake whenever he was on the market, or they can get campbell so threads about him coming to carolina could stop, Id prefer them to take suh and mccoy go second just for the simple fact that Tampa does not obtain either DT so it would make our lives easier

because trent dilfer is a draft expert and one of the best QB's of all time...

generally speaking, if there are a poo ton of people who are considered "experts" that believe the kid is legit, then I am inclined to believe that the kid is legit. not douchey bald trent dilfer.

I don't know what my problem is with the guy, I hate him as an analyst, he's just overly cocky, arrogant, and makes stupid calls all the time. he just rubs me the wrong way.

The only concern on Bradford is injury, but that's a big one.

Clausen is definitely the most ready, but also the biggest douche. I could see his attitude getting in the way of his development, but as Philip Rivers has shown us, you can be a complete turd and still be a great QB provided you put in the work.

Colt started really showing something as a Junior, but he regressed last year due to his lack of run game and the fact he turned into a giant vagina on the field out of fear of injury.

If Bradford can stay healthy, I think he'll turn out great, but I can see Dilfer's words coming true.

    • It’s like being on the Flyers broadcast team feed so far
    • Boy the flyers look good early. Lots of bad plays and slow start by our team. Hope that changes before the score changes.
    • I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes into account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as another treading water year (at QB). I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room. Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked. That’s how I look at it.
