Santonio Holmes traded to JETS!!!

We sucked at drafting running backs until Deangelo.

Prior drafts were run under Tony Softli's watch. Williams was drafted with Don Gregory in charge of scouting.

yeah we should have gone after the junkie who can't keep clean but wants a big pay day who wanted to play for a big market team, looking at a 4 game suspension and if he screws up again (which is INCREDIBLY LIKELY because the guy is a fool) he could be out for a year.

yeah....we really screwed up on this one not going after holmes. lol

Seriously :nonod:

The guy has been arrested three times in three years. He's already facing a four game suspension and his next incident could get him eight games to a year. Add in that he's clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I'd gladly take any rookie we're scouting over a guy with that much baggage.

anyways, people can't get too upset about not getting Holmes. it's obvious that Steelers didn't take time to shop him around, because I can think of ummmm, around 31 teams in the league that would have given more than a 5th for a 26 year old SB MVP receiver coming off a 1300 yard, 10 TD season. Even the best analysts/'insiders' had no idea that he was on the block.

Not quite true. It's now been reported that the Steelers called everyone - except teams in their division - to inquire about interest in Holmes.

Yep. I remembered Gregory being hired in 2006, just the wrong month

Of course, we were actually set to take Laurence Maroney instead. In that particular case, the Patriots saved us from ourselves.

We seemed pretty happy with D-Will too though if I remember correctly. That was one of our quicker first-round selections.

Basically I was just making a point that just because Colbert and Jarrett (maybe) didn't work out, that doesn't mean we'll never draft a great receiver.

It's funny, but if you look at a lot of the prior drafts, nearly every time the Panthers had a choice between two players, they nearly always chose the wrong one.

95 - Kerry Collins over Steve McNair

96 - Tshimanga Biakabutuka over Eddie George

98 - Jason Peter over Vonnie Holliday

02 - DeShaun Foster over Clinton Portis

And 2006 would have been Maroney over Williams, had the Pats not intervened.

And actually, the Pats "saved us" the next year as well. The Panthers were set to take Brandon Meriweather at #25, but New England took him instead. We had to settle for some guy named Jon Beason :sosp:

There are other examples of bad draft choices, mind you. These are the ones in their history where it's come down to a choice between two viable options. In such cases, the Panthers have a bad history of taking the wrong one.

That's why anytime this situation comes up, I cringe :(

lol

Per a league source, the Steelers "called everyone" regarding the possibility of trading for Holmes. (The source then acknowledged that the Ravens likely weren't called, and possibly not the Browns or the Bengals. The Eagles don't see a potential problem with calling any of those three teams.)

seriously?

People who say we are so good that we dont need Santonio are just as bad as the people screaming we should have traded for him.IMO

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
