Preseason Thread

Canes controlled every aspect of the game against Tampa Bay Friday night. Of course, it was the Canes A team mostly against TB's "depth" squad, as they put it.

Kochetkov played well in net, he didn't have to make that many saves as TB's shots on goal totaled 17.

One concern I have is Orlov. He wasn't good last night again- a trend during the preseason. He misplayed a couple pucks resulting in turnovers and wasn't able to stop outlet passes up the boards on at least 5 plays I saw. Maybe that's why he's playing in almost every preseason game because RBA has figured out it takes time for him to find his game.

Slavin and Burns- exactly what you'd expect. And Burns was surprisingly physical last night. Although credited with 1 hit, he was a physical presence on both ends. The vets all played well- Staal, Aho was active, I had to look for Martinook a couple times, although he made a helluva play to save a goal when Kochetkov got caught out of the net.

I also thought the Canes passed up a lot of shot opportunities trying to make the extra pass. And you know that won't sit well with RBA. Get pucks to the net- his mantra.

    • I mean, if Moore really wants out, then it would behoove the Bears to make it happen sooner than later. X is a lot younger and cheaper, and may be a better fit for Johnson's musings than a disgruntled, unnecessary, overpaid vet. If they can dump his salary and maybe get a fourth or so in return, it may be worth it to them. As for development, I'm not concerned. You're talking about a seeming bust, a day three guy and a UDFA. They are developing relative to their ceilings. I doubt any of them will ever command the coverage, money, or the respect that Moore has acquired. He's a tier above them. Yes, even X.
    • IMO, if Ceedee plays against us, the game probably goes the other way. Same with Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins. Our team just isn't designed to beat teams with two high level receivers like that. But when you look at the league, how many teams really have two guys of that caliber?  There's nothing wrong with defensive adjustments, but sometimes I think a lot of fans want Evero to call a different play like a game on madden, and defensive football just isn't like that. That said, I thought we did a much better job this season against the Cowboys of flipping Jaycee and at least making them work for it, opposed to last season when they literally just lined CeeDee up on the other side of the field every single snap.  For us to just straight up switch to consistent man coverage, or a different zone, or whatever, we likely would consistently need different personnel on the field. Doing it a few times a game is a gamble and can work, but if we consistently run man coverage against the Cowboys, eventually a RB is going to beat a linebacker, or something of that nature with our personnel. Part of the reason Evero likes this scheme is that, while we have our defaults and presets, what we do is very multiple, and you can do a lot of different things pre and post snap. We are a challenging defense to read. But as you said, if guys are getting beat, it doesn't really matter what you call.
