What to do with Sherod Martin???

Ok, so 2009 comes around and we lose Ken Lucas. The team then drafts Sherod Martin as a replacement for Lucas. His measurables were better than Shaun Smith. He seemed like he could play outside and I liked that because I like Marshall as the nickleback. Marshall is a great tackler, he has the tenacity of a linebacker.

So when TC starts it seems like it's taking a while for Martin to digest the playbook and get comfortable. He's was ahead of Munnerlynn(on the depth chart at least) during this time even with his struggles.

As the season goes on we get a ton of injuries that forces us to move Martin back to his original position at safety. Everybody loved this since Godfrey was playing like poo. Godfrey get's injured and Martin takes his place. Martin ends up doing pretty well showing a nose for the ball. It looked like we had a new FS.

When Godfrey became healthy again, he immediately gets his job back. A lot of people didn't like this. Turns out the time off must have done Godfrey some good, he plays at a very high level.

So now we have Harris, Godfrey, and Martin who could all potentially start. If any of them sits on the bench it feels like an inefficient use of their abilities.

We also have 3 decent corners in Gamble, Marshall, and Munnerlynn. Physically Martin is a better prototype than Marshall or Munnerlyyn, but is he better? I'd rather have a bigger guy on the outside but it doesn't matter if he can't play.

So what do with do with him? We can try to do what we did originally and give him a shot at CB. Or we give him a shot at FS and see if he can beat out Godfrey. I don't know what to do.

I wonder if one of the reasons the FO gave Marshall a low tender was Martin. If we had Martin ready to step up at CB then it would be great to trade Marshall. Then we would have our talent Maximized.

I like having three good safeties. It's like having two starting-caliber RB's. They'll keep each other fresh and push each other to play at a high level. If one goes down, there's not much drop off. Run Harris and Godfrey on running downs, bring in Martin in passing situations.

put the S spot up for competition.....Martin will beat out Godfrey. Give Godfrey a shot at corner. Martin is a S and Godfrey is a CB.

All Godfrey did when he came back from injury was learn how to hit....he still is poor in coverage and poor in making tackles when the opponent already has the ball in their hands and making a run. Too much was made of Godfrey's FF. They were big plays that helped us....but overalll Godfrey over his first two seasons as our S has not shown enough.

But why Godfrey on running downs? He's shown that tackling is not one of his strong points.. assuming he has any strong points.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
