What to do with Sherod Martin???

godfrey after he got hurt was a whole lot better than before he got hurt in all phases. before he came back i thought that martin had won the job right out but gofrey came back really strong.

imo, both of them have the job. doesn't matter who has the start. both can do well at it and should be splitting duties. as many 5 and even 6 DB sets as we have going they should both be seeing the field a lot.

:mad2::mad2:

he is getting better

he had some FFs that WERE huge plays to help Carolina. Coming back from injury he didn't look like his coverage or open field tackling got any better than the year and 1/2 of horrible play he displayed prior on those aspect. Still don't think he has displayed enough where his job shouldn't be up for grabs.

Martin wasn't struggling at CB in training camp. He was doing just fine as he learned the position. He didn't give up any big plays, and the only catches he did give up were short stuff in which he was draped on the receiver. But he also wasn't making any plays either (which may have been a reason some didn't think he was doing well, along with the hype Munnerlyn was receiving). But that was to be expected since he was still trying to figure out what he was doing, so really didn't take any risks and was still thinking out there.

Personally, from what I have seen from him, he does have the skillset to play CB, and that's where I think the team ultimately wants him. After all, he wasn't moved to Safety because of anything he did or didn't do, but because we had a rash of injuries there and Wesley failed to transition first. And Fox has come out and said Martin's injury stunted his development a bit, which I take to mean that they were not able to work him back in at CB once the season started, so left him at a position he was familiar with.

IMO, the reason why they re-inserted Godfrey back in at Safety even after Martin had clearly outplayed his production up to that point was for two reasons: 1) they like him and think he can be a better FS than some fans do, and 2) because their long-term plan is not for Martin to be a FS, but CB...which, after all, is what they drafted him to be. So I fully expect to see Martin at CB once mini-camps start.

put the S spot up for competition.....Martin will beat out Godfrey. Give Godfrey a shot at corner. Martin is a S and Godfrey is a CB.

All Godfrey did when he came back from injury was learn how to hit....he still is poor in coverage and poor in making tackles when the opponent already has the ball in their hands and making a run. Too much was made of Godfrey's FF. They were big plays that helped us....but overalll Godfrey over his first two seasons as our S has not shown enough.

why would you want godfrey at cornerback if you think he's poor in coverage? godfrey is a strong safety and nothing more. i don't know what his contract is like, but we should put him backing up harris. if his contract is too big to be a 2nd stringer, trade him.

i said, give him a shot. Godfrey isn't an NFL S....his 2 seasons proved that...overall, he simply isn't good in coverage nor at making open field tackles. Godfrey wasn't a S in college and the NFL experiment would be over if he played for anyone other than the stubborn Fox.

I wonder how he would do in that Joker (was that what it was called) position that Wesley sometime was in.
i think he could do pretty well but i would rather have him staying int he backfield where he can be more of a ball hawk. the new guy that was brought in from the 49ers would actually be pretty good at that. he's known for being a pretty quick and nasty hitter.

Ironically it really depends on how the Richard Marshall situation pans out.

Say we trade him for a second round pick on the day of the draft (NOT-likely, but possible) I forsee Godfrey moving back to his original position of corner and Martin taking the FS spot.

Davis wasnt anything great his second year either. He had totally switched his postion and did not look special till around his thrid year. Now look at him.

With a two years under his belt learning the new postion, and him showing defintite improvemnt late last season, I think its reasonable to say Godfry could be pretty decent this year.

Godfrey broke out after returning from his injury and played lights out. His tackling AND his coverage improved. He leads our returning players in caused turnovers. If he continues to play the way he did towards the end of last year, you can't put him on the bench. I want Martin to stay at safety...there's nothing wrong with a healthy rotation, and sooner or later someone is going to get hurt and we'll need a good back-up. You can also look at it this way; we're grooming Martin to be Harris' successor.

Davis didn't look very special early....however, Davis didn't look like the worst player to take the field the majority of his first two seaons.

Ok, so 2009 comes around and we lose Ken Lucas. The team then drafts Sherod Martin as a replacement for Lucas.

Martin wasn't drafted, in my opinion, as a replacement for Lucas. I think the team knew Marshall would be taking over for him.

How long did it take for Fox to say Martin might work out at safety? I thought it was shortly after drafting him?

I agree.
