Team Needs Thread

It’s clear this team is broken and needs help. What is everyone’s opinions of what this team needs to get back to playing respectable hockey.

1. 2nd center. KK is not a good player.  He plays soft and can’t won’t shoot

2. Goalie. We need someone to pair with Koochie. Can’t wait for Freddie or else we will be out of a playoff spot.
3. Defense. Ghost and Walker play horrible defense.  Maybe Nikishin comes this season.
4. Size. Svech has gone away from physical play. We need a couple HEAVY forwards. All our forwards are tiny.

Jeckel and Hyde team right now - how can they be shut down dominate on one night and look like crap against a bad team next game? I think it's more a lack of focus for some reason, maybe too many mixed up line combinations, and the D-men need to commit every game. Are these guys coddled too much? Light a fire under their ass and get them to buy in every game and they could still surprise us. Also get a capable goalie to go with Kooch, Freddie will come back and just get hurt again.

It’s our top guys who have to pick it up. If they play the way Rod wants them to play for 60 minutes, they are a machine and can go toe-to-toe with anyone. It’s an exhausting effort and I wonder if this system after so many years has taken a toll.

A 2C or at least a big, physical top-6 winger who can score would be ideal. I would love Brock Nelson and think he would fit the team perfectly.

It may be best to just attack the roster in the offseason unless there is a needle moving trade available at the TDL. We have a lot of cap space opening up, we can address a lot of our concerns come July.

Vatrano is a LW, not a center. He played center his first 2 years in the league at Boston and has played nothing but LW since. He is in the final year of his current $3.65M contract. He's coming off 41 and 60 point seasons in Anaheim. Played mostly on the 3rd line, where Staal is now. Unless Carolina is thinking about moving Robinson? Carrier just signed a 5-year deal, so he's going nowhere.

I have no idea why or how Vatrano comes into this unless KK is suddenly in play. I don't get that, either because his contract is ridiculous.

Prospects? To get a backup goaltender and a LW, Carolina is going to give someone up from the starting lines as well as prospects, at least 2, I'm thinking.

Did KK piss off RBA the other night when KK didn't drop the gloves and protect Necas and Orlov when he was on the ice for both hits?

A lot of variables here...

And, for the record, I said on this very board a couple years ago the Canes should have signed Gibson as a #2 when he was a UFA.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is a garbage road team:

Doesn't matter who scores first on the road, the Canes are 9-11-2 on the road this year. No doubt that if they're leading going into the 3rd period, they're almost perfect. Problem is, they're giving up the first goal of the game way too often.

Judging by the media jumping all of the canes efforts and players could go a long way.  Local media is hammering the canes.  Usually when that starts to happen it can really wake up the boys. Slavin called out the canes publicly last night. Said the last month and a half it’s just not good enough. Glad it’s being recognized.  I’ve felt when this team was crushing it, there is a high level of accountability.  This year, there hasn’t been any it seems. Now, it’s seems it’s being addressed.  However, piss poor goalie play will continue to hold them back unless the team gets it.

    • No one's saying LaMelo has no blame we're responding to you acting like he's the reason they lost. The scapegoating and blaming the teams woes on his personality is where it's like Cam Newton all over again. It was a failure on multiple fronts and primarily Lee's. Dude said ON AIR pregame that they had to protect the paint and if that was his gameplan going in he couldn't have botched it more. As the commentators said Ball's a rhythm guy and Orlando was preventing him for getting any kind of flow going. I'm a normie watching on TV and said they needed to bait them into fouling to combat that. They didn't even try until the 2nd half when it was too late. I think it's fair to expect the star to overcome whatever but LaMelo was not the problem in that game and he's not what is holding the team back. He's the only reason they're flirting with being a great team. I kinda put the center play on Lee too. Moose is great until he's up against a big who can body him. We've always known that and that's what Kalkbrenner is for. I don't know if it would have changed much but Kalkbrenner should have had more minutes than him.  And moving forward with the center position, I just think it's the time to trade Diabate while his stock's high and that's not an indictment of his game. He's like an evolved combination of Biyombo and PJ. He's a great rim protector and the strength issue is just what you're going to have to deal with if you want that. But Kalkbrenner is perfectly capable of protecting the rim and we gotta get away from the undersized centers or it'll always be a problem for us.
    • Honestly its why that Jalen Coker grab was a big deal.  I'd been warming up to the idea of a sadiq pick and was adamantly against a receiver...but this altered my train of thought.  I mean For instance, Cade Otton signed for 3 yr 30 mil contract...thats not dramatically different than the rookie payscale for #19 (4 year 20 mil with 5th year option), however you KNOW otton is decent...no clue if Sadiq will be anything.
