Question about leaving a job

So I am here for yalls wisdom. I am considering leaving my company for a new job. As of right now I have two weeks of vacation that I have accrued. (sp?) Is my employer required to pay me that two weeks?

I have read many different answers online and everyone is different. We have no company handbook that gives us guidlines. So does anyone have any information on this? Thanks in advance.

They don't have to pay you, but if you leave for a good reason, they may extend you the ole take the vacation and two weeks notice at the same time deal.

Inmicus is correct... check for a company policy on it... If they won't pay you for it, you may want to use it, then resign. I would suggest being as cordial about it as you can however, as you don't want to piss them off and create a bad reference for yourself.

I would like to ask them about it, but it would raise suspicion that I am thinking about leaving. I have a feeling that I might get screwed out of it.

Do you have a pay stub that indicates your accrued PTO per pay period? If so, they do have to pay you for it as it is part of your earned compensation. If you have separate PTO and sick days, you lose your sick days.

Tough call... You don't want to piss anyone off because you might need a letter of recommendation.

I agree with what some people have said... Check the handbook; if you can't find it, ask someone.

Just checked with my HR friends here at work. They said that unless your policy states that it is not "earned" over the year and not owed, then they are required to pay it to you upon leaving the company.

Well typically you are required to give two weeks notice, right? I think it's pretty standard practice to give your notice and then take your two weeks vacation. That way you're not asking them to pay for it, you're just taking your vacation. They can't stop you from taking it.

They aren't required to provide PTO but if they do, then they owe it to you.

I say based on the current job market. Leave on as good of terms as possible. If that means NO vaca, do it.

I have heard too many stories of people bolting for another job and some even got moving expenses etc only to get cut loose.

It's not a buyers market for jobs. Take the high road.
